Chiapas, Mexico | Unprecedented Tourism Plan to Shine in the International Landscape Launched

Chiapas, a southern Mexican state bordering Guatemala, well known for its highlands, colonial towns and dense rainforests dotted with stunning Mayan Archaeological sites among them the ancient ruins of Bonampak, Chinkutic, El Lagartero, Lacanha, Palenque, Toniná and Yachilán, and also home to one of the largest indigenous populations in the country, with twelve federally recognized ethnicities, launched an unprecedented tourism plan to shine in the international landscape.

This tourism plan for Chiapas that stands out worlwide focuses on the state’s natural, cultural and archaeological wealth, promoting authentic and sustainable experiences, with the aim to highlight the diverse landscapes, from lush jungles to stunning waterfalls and the iconic archaeological sites, as well as the rich indigenous culture and its delicious local cuisine.

The Governor Eduardo Ramírez Aguilera assumed tourism leadership receiving federal support to transform tourism in the state into a social and economic engine after a meeting which took place at the Sumidero Canyon National Park which saw the presence of the Federal Secretary of Tourism Josefina Rodríguez Zamora with the installation of Codetech, the Tourism Development Committee of the State of Chiapas. 

This initiative marks a new chapter for Tourism in the state, representing a move which seeks to coordinate actions between authorities and the private sector to develop a model of sustainable tourism with a human approach, which protects natural resources and raises the quality of life in communities.

The Governor announced investment in infrastructure, campaigns and strategies that promote the cultural, historical and natural wealth of the state, and he stressed that, after overcoming a period of challenges, the government is working to generate a safe environment to reactivate the arrival of visitors.

The head of the state said that Chiapas should not be invented because it was born beautiful, it just has to be shown, and tourism should be a way to strengthen peace, social justice and shared prosperity.

During the event, representatives of the tourism and business sector of Chiapas supported the creation of Codetech and agreed that the initgiative guarantees continuity and strategic vision to position the state as a competitive destination.

The Federal Secretary of Tourism Josefina Rodríguez Zamora recognized the governor’s vision and assured that Codetech will be key to implement actions aligned with the 2030 Plan which includes strengthening infrastructure, equipment, training and promotion.

In collaboration with UNESCO, a Community Tourism Guide will be developed in digital gallery format, which will make visible the natural and artisanal wealth of Chiapas, directly benefiting its communities. 

The Federal Secretary of Tourism pledged to promote Chiapas as a venue for international and conventions and in addition, stressing that community tourism will have a strategic role in the national agenda, with the state as a leading actor in 2025.

From her part, the State Secretary of Tourism, María Eugenia Culebro Pérez, stressed that Codetech will allow the integration of the public, private and social sectors in an inclusive, sustainable tourism model oriented to human development.

The municipal President of  Tuxla Gutiérrez, Ángel Torres Culebro, celebrated that the security policies of the New Era government have generated conditions of peace and well - being projecting the state as an extraordinary place. 

At the Ex - Convent of Santo Domingo in Chiapa de Corzo, small city in the west - central part of Chiapas, located in Grijalva River Valley of the Chiapas highlands, the Governor and the Federal Secretary delivered uniforms and training certificates to river opperators of the Sumidero Canyon. 

Highlighting the relevance of training, the Governor announced an economic stimulus for those who complete their certification, in recognition of their commitment lauding the operators as the letter of introduction in Chiapas.

The  Federal Secretary of Tourism named the Governor as “tourism amabassador” of the state for sharing the vision of promoting community promoted by President Claudia Sheimbaum.

The Secretary of Tourism of Chiapas pointed out that these actions dignify the work of those who make tours in the Sumidero Canyon, a key activity in the tourism development of the region.

The Representative of the River Cooperative Socitties, Mauricio Alejandro Ortiz Ruiz, said that the support improves the quality of service, professionalizes the guild and projects Chiapa de Corzo as an international destinations.

The current municipal president of Chiapa de Corzo Límbano Domínguez Román, reiterated his support for tourism as an engine of economic and social growth, anchored in the cultural, architectural and traditional wealth of the historic city.
