Peru | Advancing in Measures to Optimize the Management of the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu with Coordinated Actions

Peru is notably advancing in measures to optimize the management of the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, iconic Inca citadel in the Peruvian Andes, established around 1450, known for its spectacular architecture, sophisticated stonework, with buildings, terraces and ramps that integrate seamlessly with the steep mountainous landscape. Recognized as a mixed - use UNESCO World Heritage site, Machu Picchu is both a significant cultural monument and a protected natural sanctuary with a rich diversity of flora and fauna.

With the aim of providing comprehensive solutions to the challenges faced by the Historic Sanctuary the Ministries of Culture, Environment and Foreign Trade and Tourism initiated coordinated actions in a joint process aimed at modernizing management, reinforcing conservation and guaranteeing safe and orderly access to Peru’s main tourist and cultural destination.

The 2025 high season will have a new daily visitor cap with a limit of 5.600 visitors and updated regulations to prevent damage, preserve the site, managing flow of tourists, stricter rules for what visitor can bring and do, along with ongoing efforts to manage land use in the surrounding areas and monitor visitor behaviour using new technologies.

The Ministry of Culture renewed the virtual ticket sales platform, with reinforced standards of security, transparency and comtrol, and began with technical training for the teams of three ministeries involved, in order to provide clear information to tour operators.

As part of the measures adopted, on November 17, the advance of tickets for the network of the Inka Trail and the Llaqta of Machu Picchu began successfully, following the recommendations made by tour operators and contribuiting to a more efficient planning of national and international visits.

On the same date, the three sectors signed a specific collaboration agreement to promote a new study of carrying capacitiy in the Historic Sanctuary, which will be an indispensable tool for the sustainable management of the site.

Similarly, the process of comprehensive updating of the regulatory framework that regulates tourism and conservation activities in Machu Picchu began, incorporating the participation of all competent sectors.

Likewise, the ministers will request the Technical Secretariat of the Machu Picchu Management Unit (UGM) to convene a session of the Steering Committee and inform the Regional Government of Cusco and local authorities about the progress of these measures.

The Ministries of Culture, Environment and Foreign Trade and Tourism agreed that the solution to the challenges facing Machu Picchu requires an articulated and sustained intervention. In this sense, they reaffirmed their commitment to protect and manage Peru’s most iconic cultural heritage in a responsible and coordinated manner.

·       Regional transport : The high – speed network will also be served by Desiro HC regional trains, which are adapted for the climate and have a top speed of 160 km/h.

On the same day, the Desiro HC regional train successfully completed its first train run on newly constructed tracks near the 6th of October Depot, west of Cairo.

The Desiro HC also developed by Siemens Mobility is a key element of Egypt’s new high - speed rail network with 94 trains set to provide efficient and comfortable regional transport. It features a unique combination of single - deck cars for high capacity, optimized passenger flow, and comfort.

Key features include an energy - efficient design with regenerative braking, a modern interior with features like WiFi and real - time information, spaciousness with multi - purpose areas, and flexible configuration options and is specially adapted for Egypt’s climate. Each train offers up to 849 passengers spaces and advanced features such as air conditioning.

With a top speed of 160 km/h, the Desiro HC fleet will play a vital role in connecting cities along the Green Line that is already referred to as the “Suez Canal on Rails”. This line consists of a 660 kilometres network connecting Cairo to Ain Sokhma, Alexandria, and Marsa Matrouh.

These achievements underscore Egypt’s bold vision to build one of the world’s largest high - speed rail networks and highlighting Siemens Mobility’s commitment to delivering fully integrated, sustainable transportation solutions tailored to Egypt’s unique environment.

China | World Leader in UNESCO’s Intangible Heritage List

China is the world leader in UNESCO’s intangible heritage (IHC) list according to a new report released by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

The UNESCO Intangible List is a global list of practices, expressions, knowledge, and skills that communities recognize as part of their cultural identity and that are passed down through generations. Examples include oral traditions and storytelling, performing arts, social practices, culinary traditions, crafts, and festivals. The list includes the “Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” and the “List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding”.

China now has 44 elements inscribed on the UNESCO's intagible heritage list, the most globally, as reported Global Times, a daily Chinese tabloid owned by the People’s Daily Press, after adding new elements like the Spring Festival social practices of the Chinese people for the traditional new year, Taijiquan, a traditional martial art, and the Wangchuan ceremony, also known as Ong Chun, a traditional Chinese ritual for coastal communities that involves worshipping Ong Yah, a deity believed to protect people and their lands from sea - related disasters.

This achievement is a result of China’s preservation efforts, including the 14 Five - Year Plan which added numerous items to its national list, and recognized thousands of new inheritors.

The report indicates that during the period of the 14th Five - Year Plan, China added 325 new items to its national heritage list and recognized 942 heirs. A network of 276 cultural ecology reserves has also been established, while 2.290 heirs nationwide have been systematically documented.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism highlighted a notable increase in public participation following activities linked to the preservation and highlighting relevance of the cultural heritage, driven by digital platforms. In 2024, an average of 65.000 heritage - related live streams were streamed daily through Chinese short -form video services.

Local governments have expanded cultural studios, training spaces, and 12.900 heritage workshops were established nationwide. These centres support teaching, production, and community engagement, contributing to local cultural industries.

Research institutions are also exploring new methods of preservation. In Tianjin,  a major international port city on the shore of the Bohai Sea, China’s first Artificial Intelligence Art School develops digital tools to support innovation in heritage, including projects with traditional relief prints.

According to the report, these combined efforts have strengthened China’s ability to safeguard traditional culture, while expanding public access to intangible heritage across the country.
