Brazil has revealed the creation of “Corales de Brasil” a coalition with the aim to preserve and restore coral reef, as reported by Agência Brasil, a nationwide news agency based in the capital orf the country, Brasilia and run by the Brazilian government.
The establishment of the coalition was announced at the 30th UN Climate Conference (COP30) held in Belém, capital of the state of Pará,relevant port city and gateway to Brazil’s lower Amazon, highlighting the critical role of coral reefs in biodiversity, coastal protection, and economic stability.
"Corales de Brasil" is a collaborative muti - stakeholders initiative involving the government, researchers, non – governmental sector, traditional communities and the private sector that plans to achieve the expansion of protected areas and support innovative solutions for their restoration.
This initiative aligns with the National Plan de Action for Coral Reef Conservation (PAN Corais) and Brazil’s commitment to sustainable ocean management under the Ocean Panel, part of wider national and international efforts that aim to restore 30% of degraded reefs by 2030 and secure public and private funding for conservation and restoration projects.
Coral reefs occupy less than 0.1% of the ocean floor, but they are of crucial ecological importance, providing shelter and food for approximately 25% of marine organism species, and they can become a symbol of the fight against the effects of climate change.
In the
opinion of activists, the threats to coral reef ecosystems are global warning,
land pollution, uncontrolled development of coastal areas and overfishing.

Nunes, explained that the group wants to influence public policies, implement
innovative solutions, create sustainable financing mechanism and demonstrate
Brazil’s leading role in the global mission of coral conservation, which is one of the main initiatives in the creation of the coalition.
