A series of large - scale transport and urban developments are reshaping mobility, public space and the city’s appeal as tourism destination of relevance. Greek Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Dimas recently outlined the portfolio of works now underway, signalling a new era for Northern Greece’s largest city.

A central project is the city’s metro extension toward Kalamaria, scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2026, adding 4.6 kilometres and five stations, bringing the total to 18 stations.

The new line developed on the impact of the main metro system, has already reduced private car traffic by up to 15%. For visitors, the extension is expected to provide faster and easier connections between coastal districts, cultural sites and the city centre.

Progress is also advancing on Thessaloniki Flyover expressway, currently 36% complete and stated for delivery in 2027. The project will create an elevated corridor designed to ease congestion, improve access between the airport, the port, major hotels and key tourism areas, and reduce travel times across the metropolitan area.

A new vertical rail/road axis to Bucharest is planned, improving links with Romania, and broader railway modernizations are underway as part of the Thessaloniki 2030 strategy PRO. The metro and these new corridors will make it easier for tourists to explore the city and other regions.

At the port of Thessaloniki, upgrades including the expansion of Pier 6 and a strengthen rail connection aim to position the city as a more competitive node for cruise tourism and city break travel. These investments also support the region’s growing role within the emerging “Baltic - Black Sea – Aegean” transport corridor, which is raising the city’s profile as a strategic gateway for trade and travel in Europe.

A further project is the waterfront development with a new 1.1 wooden deck and the expansion of the seaside pedestrian zone that will redefine the seafront by 2026, creating a more appealing visitor experience.

Across the wider city landscape, complementary projects are taking shape. Green spaces and pocket parks are being added and the development of new park in Harilaou is moving forward.

Also investments in smart mobility and sustainable transport reinforce Thessaloniki’s image as a contemporary hub.

Hotel capacity in the city is also set to grow with new properties planned around the redevelopment of the historic FIX complex by DIMAND, a massive urban regeneration project transforming the abandoned FIX brewery into a vibrant, mixed - use district featuring homes, offices, cultural venues like the MOMus Museum & State Orchestra, the upcoming Thessaloniki International Exhibition Center and public green spaces.

Together, these developments signal Thessaloniki’s move toward a more functional, accessible and contemporary cityscape, one that strengthens both quality of life residents and the visitor experience.

As the projects progress over the coming years, Thessaloniki is increasingly positioned to compete among the Mediterranean’s most attractive urban destinations.

These developments undoubtedly strengthen the city’s position as a key tourism hub in southern  Europe, focusing on accessibility and a modern visitor experience.

Indonesia | Developing a Continuous Warning System for Natural Disasters

Indonesia is developing a continuous, uninterrumpted warning system for natural disasters by building a duplicated command centre in Jakarta and Bali regions and installing by 2027, 17 new marine radars also in North Sumatra, Central Kalimantan and Riau to monitor earthquakes, storms, tsunamis, volcanic activities, extreme weather, dangerous waves and rains that threaten both boats, coastal centres and tourist resorts.

The new system, which aims for greater speed and reliability, is being developed to ensure that the warning network remains active even if one command centre fails and will integrate data into a single national platform monitoring.

This is an enhancement of the existing Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning System (InaTEWS) which has been upgraded since the 2004 tsunami.

During the hearings in parliament, the Director of the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) Teuku Faisal Fathani, shared this information with Antara News, stating that the aim of this massive modernisation is to ensure the continuous operations of the early warning network and improve the speed of data transmission on extreme weather events and natural disasters.

The official added that thanks to the system with two control centres, the entire network will remain operational even if a failure occurs in one of the regions, and that the maritime radar is essential to monitor in an efficient way, heavy rains, strong winds and high waves that pose a threat to navigation and tourism.

According to the director, the accuracy of the BMKG’s meterological and geophysical information has already exceeded the planned national targets reaching 102.9%, while the level of public satisfaction with the agency’s services in the third quarter of 2025 was 99.73%.

Brazil | Preparing a Completely Carbon - Neutral Scientific Expedition to Antarctica

Brazil is preparing a scientific expedition to Antarctica with a zero carbon footprint scheduled for the end of 2025 or the beginning of 2026, with four researchers who will go to the “Cryosphere 1” laboratory, created between 2011 and 2012, located 600 km from the South Pole, a fully automated scientific platform that in summer runs on solar energy and in winter on small wind turbines.

According to the Brazilian news portal Brasil 247, the laboratory is located where the relationship between forest fires in the Amazon and the melting of Antarctic glaciers was confirmed.

Brazil expedition focuses heavily on climate change, studying ice melt, ocean dynamics, pollution (microplastics) and biodiversity with advanced tech like CO2 monitoring modules (Cryosphere).

This logistic operation, which include the use of commercial aircraft, a cargo ship, a polar ship and a snowmobile, was thoroughly analysed for emissions.

The apprimately 9 tons of carbon dioxide generated will be fully offset by planting 200 trees from the Atlantic Forest in collaboration with the Guapiçu ecological reserve (REGUA), a vital private conservation area in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, focused on restoring degraded land, protecting biodiversity, snd supporting research through partnerships, eco - tourism, and wildlife reintroduction programs.

Local communities and students will participate in this initiative, thus expanding the social impact of the project.

The publication points out that data from “Cryosphere - 1” laboratory showed that carbon particles generated by fires in the Amazon reach the upper layers of the atmosphere, they are transported by air currents and are finally deposited on Antarctic ice.

This action reduces the albedo (the reflective capacity of the surface), causing faster warming, and accelerates ice melting and the findings will reinforce the need for strict measures against deforestation and forest fires.

The scientists also found that about 50% of the soot particles detected in Antarctica come from tourist cruise ships operating in the region. The growth of polar tourism, driven by the search for the so called “extreme experiences” worries researchers. If the current trend continues, entire regions of Antarctica could reach an irreversible melting point.

The 17 members of the committee agreed that Madrid offered the best response for the organization long-term strategic and operational needs.

Among the factors that have influenced the decision have also been the difficulties arising from Brexit, especially those related to mobility of talent, which made the United Kingdom and London  less attractive as a venue

In this context the World & Tourism Council (WTTC) seeks to strengthen its operational capacity and maintain a truly international perspective operning a new chapter in Madrid.

WTTC CEO Gloria Guevara, thanked the Spanish government for its support, stressing that being in Madrid will allow the organization to become even stronger, offering a closer relationship with the body members and playing a key role in advising on policies that boost tourism growth and employment.

The establishment of the WTTC headquarters in Madrid is in addition to the presence in the Spanish capital of the global headquarters of UN Tourism (formerly UNWTO), the United Nations specialized agency for the sector, which has been in the Iberian city for decades.

This concentration of international organisations linked to tourism reinforces Madrid as a reference node to strengthen cooperation, research, advocacy, members engagement in the travel and tourism industry and the design of global policies in the field.
