Rouen, vibrant city and capital of the region Normandy, a bustling port hub on the River Seine, in northwestern France, important centre in the Roman era and Middle Ages, through Métropole Rouen Normandie, intercommunal public structure centred on the city of Rouen which has the purpose to synchronize public services and build a better metropolitan area by combining the resources and efforts of its 71 municipalities. has unveiled the project of “The Sail”, its new, strikingConvention Center.

The city is famous for its historical significance, particularly as the site of Joan of Arc’s trial and execution, and for its rich architectural heritage, including the stunning Cathedral, its famous astronomical gothic clock from the 14th century, the Gros Horologe, a picturesque medieval quarter with numerous half - timbered houses, and also for its vibrant gastronomic scene.

Presented last October, the project marks the latest architectural landmark for Métropole Rouen Normandie and will rise on a former site, near the Pont Gustave - Flaubert, a vertical lift - bridge over the river Seine, officially opened on 25th September 2008 close the interchange of the Autoroute de Normandie (A13) highway.

The design is nicknamed “The Sail “ due to its distinctive, wave - like roof that evokes sails and Rouen’s naval history and was unveiled by the Danish architectural firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), known for its “pragmatic utopian” design philosophy, which blends imaginative, ambitious concepts with practical, sustainable, and functional solutions.

The project embodies Rouen’s historic connection to the Seine River and maritime heritage and aims to serve as a modern civic and cultural destination that reconnect the city with its waterfront while embracing forward - looking sustainability goals.

Sustainability is central to the concept. The architects plan to use bio - sourced materials and natural ventilation systems, with the goal of achieving energy self - sufficiency. To mitigate flood risks from the Seine, the entire structure will be slightly elevated, protecting its foundations from rising water.

Entirely constructed from timber, the Convention Center will feature a sweeping roof shaped like ship sails, a tribute to the outstanding Rouen’s naval history, its celebrated Armada tall ship gatherings, and the impressionist vision of emblematic painters such as Corot and Monet.

The roof will be be fitted with photovoltaic panels, allowing the building to generate its own energy.
The building’s timber and glass facades will also echo the texture of the city’s traditional half - timbered houses.

Toward the Seine, tall wooden columns will support an undulating rooline creating a strong visual link between the city and the waterfront. On the urban side, the roof flows downward into six waves that form shaped canopies.

The conference center will house a stunning exhibition hall with movable partitions. It will features a 1.400 - seat auditorium for conferences and cultural events, modular exhibition halls and various meeting rooms, alongside a dining area of equal capacity than can be subdivided into three independent rooms, each with its own kitchen. The top floor will host several multipurpose rooms to accommodate smaller meetings and workshops.

The project’s landscape design will also include rain gardens with planted areas to collect and filter rainwater from the roof, naturally irrigating the soil while enhancing the site’s biodiversity.

Construction is expected to be completed by 2032, giving Rouen time to relocate existing tenants and prepare the site for one of Normandy’s most ambitious architecture projects to date and to offer Rouen the image of a cutting - edge international conference city.

Kenya | “NO SUP USE” Campaign to Phase Out Problematic Single - Use Plastics in Hospitality and Tourism Sectors Launched

Kenya through its government in partnership with Environmental Development Partners has launched the “NO SUP USE” campaign to phase out problematic single - use plastics in the tourism and hospitality sectors, starting with an initiative to eliminate plastics in protected areas.

Announced in Nairobi on 21st November 2025 during the 10th Annual Circular Economy Conference and No Waste Festival, which hosted the Kenya Plastics Pact Summit, the manual advances the 5 Rs through the principles of Refuse, Reduce, Replace, Reuse and Refill to accelerate a circular economy.

The summit convened over 300 delegates and covered EPR and legislations, design in practice, plastic - free, Global Plastic Treaty and also a focus on Meetings, Incentive, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) sector.

This new initiative expands on previous, successful policies, such as the 2017 nationwide ban on single - use plastic bags, and the 2020 ban on single - use plastics in protected areas like national parks and beaches.

The government hopes this move will improve the environment, support ecotourism, create jobs, attract investment, and position Kenya as a green manufacturing hub.

The effort involves bringing together stakeholders to collaborate on finding solutions and ensuring the initiative’s success, following on from the public support that helped make the plastic bag ban effective.

Sustainable Inclusive Business Kenya’s Karin Boomsma said the priority is research - led identification of problematic items and design led circularity.

Kenya Plastics Pact chair Akshay Shah added that circularity could be a major economic driver, positioning Kenya as a green manufacturing hub, attracting investment, creating jobs and supporting eco – tourism, and called for clear definitions of problematic plastics and viable recycling under proper enforcement.

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) through Dr. Ayub Macharia highlighted Extended Producer Responsibility, the role of wate pickers and private sector accountability across the value chain.

Switzerland | Developing Tools to Help its Winter Tourism Sector and Adapt to Climate Change

Switzerland is developing strategic tools to help its winter tourism sector and adapt to climate change, which includes creating scenarios to plan for changing snow condition.

These efforts involve collaboration between organizations include Switzerland Tourism, Swiss Cableways and MeteoSwiss, and a focus on a range of adaptation strategies, from increasing snowmaking investments to shifting towards year - round tourism models that leverage natural and cultural assets.

The goal is to manage risks and ensure the long - term viability of alpine tourism despite diminishing snow reliability.

The Swiss organizations launched “Boussole neige” (Snow Compass), a set of tools to help ski resorts for the future amidst climate change.

The platform uses climate and snow data to forecast snow reliability and snowmaking potential for 23 mountain regions, and backed by scientific data it allows stakeholders to assess climate impacts and implement targeted adaption strategies.

Key features and purpose of Boussole neige :

•    Main goal : The primary goal is to help mountain destinations plan for the future as they face the impacts of climate change.
•    Forecast snow reliability: The models predict low reliable snow conditions will be in different regions.
•    Evaluate snowmaking potential : The tools assess the potential for artificial snow production at various locations.
•    Uses scientific data : It is built on data from the Federal Office of Metereology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss) and developed by the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SFL) with support from ETH Zurich.
•    Assists stakeholders: It is designed top be used by ski resorts, mountain railways, hotels, and other winter tourism businesses.
•    Positive reception: the tools have been well – received by resorts, according to the director of the Swiss Cable Car Association.

Boussole neige combines natural and artificial snow scenarios across 280 measurement stations and evaluates each destination’s dependence on snow. The Snow Compass offers actionable strategies, already scientifically validated and in use in several Swiss regions.

Winter sports vacation are not disappearing, they are evolving. Switzerland still boasts natural advantages, but destinations must navigate uncertainty and shorter snow season at lower altitudes. Adaptation requires foresitght : reorganizing offerings, making strategic investments, and differentiating positions in the market.

The Snow Compass identifies three broad strategies, all observable in practice today:

Strategy A - Double Dowjn on Winter Sport  : Destinations at higher altitudes are reinforcing their winter offerings with innovative infrastructure and technology, rather than just maintaining the status quo :

 •    Slopes preparation :  Optimized piste preparation (Examples are in Davos and Pizol )
•    Expanded artificial snow system : Using advanced technology and sustainable water management.
•    Alternative terrain use : Prioritizing north - facing slopes and clustering the most snow reliable areas (Flumserberg; SG, Sörenberg, LU).
•    Interrregional partnerships :  Establishing collaborations with AlpsPass, Magic Pass, Arosa – Lenzerheide (GR).
•    High - altitude accommodations : Whitepods (Monthey, VS) offers eco - luxury lodges at 1.400 metres, blending sustainability with soft – snow experiences, like sledding and hiking. Frutt Mountain Resort (Melchsee – Frutt, OW), situated above 1.900 metres, transformed a day – trip site into a full – fledged winter resort, appealing to families and high – end visitors alike.

These examples show that accessibility, infrastructure quality, and clear positioning are key to long - term success in winter sports tourism.

Stategy B - Adapt to Uncertain Snow Conditions : Other regions are reinventing winter tourism beyond skiing, offering activities and experiences that attract visitors even in low – snow year :

•    Fatbiking, snowtubing, panoramic sledding (Villars, Leysin, Atzmännig) .
•    Wellness and thermal experiences (Bains de la Gruyère, Leukerbad).
•    Cultural events and festivals (Arosa Humorfestival, Caprices in  Crans – Montana).
•    Targeting international markets seeking a “touch of snow” (For example Brazil, which saw a 25% increase in mountain – region overnight stays in winter 2024 – 2025)
•    Leveraging sunshine and scenic high - altitude landscapes above fog (Rigi, Säntis, Stockhorn).

Such strategies also help fill hotels outside peak winter periods, boosting overall occupancy.

Strategy C - Focus on Other Seasons : Some resorts diversify to offset potential winter declines :

•    Charmey (FR) repositioned as a four – season destination, opening a 2.5 km slide park that draws visitors year – round.
•    Sattel – Hochsuckli (SZ) shifted from unreliable low - altitude ski operations to family – focused summer and autumn offerings, now generating more revenue in summer than winter.
•    Moléson (FR) invests in health, nature, and biking trails to attract visitors across all seasons.

This approach highlights that the future of mountain tourism in Switzerland relies not only snow but on innovation, differentiation, and long - term vision.
