Cozumel island and municipality in the Caribbean Sea, located about 16 kilometres off the eastern coast of the Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, opposite Playa del Carmen in the state of Quintana Roo, a Mexican paradise known for its rich cultural heritage, crystal waters, vibrant coral reefs, white sand beaches, and well known to be a very popular destinations for cruises and scuba diving started a major project for the rehabilitation of its main streets.
The streets are being repaved in San Miguel, the largest urban centre on Cozumel, situated on the island’s west coast where ferries and cruise ships dock, a hub for shopping, restaurants, various options of entertainment, and an ideal gateway especially for those coming from the Punta Langosta cruise port.
According to the Governor Mara Lezama, more than 32 million pesos is being spent on the island street project, and the investment used for this rehabilitation is with funding collected from the Cruise Ship Trust of Quintana Roo.
The Governor explained that the trust was created in collaboration with cruise companies to close inequality gaps with projects that benefit Cozumel and Mahaual, the first and second most important cruise destinations in the country.
The official led the groundbreaking ceremony for the rehabilitation of the main tourist streets in downtown Cozumel, accompanied by Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez, and she highlighted that the project, which is being carried out through the Department of Public Works headed by José Rafael Lara Diaz, will improve mobility, safety and the quality of life of thousands of Cozumel families.
The Governor added that this collaboration reflects the essence of the New Agreement for the Well - being and Development of Quintana Roo, through which joint actions between the government and private initiative are promoted to improve urban infrastructure, strengthen the local economy for the well - being of the people.
Finally, the official said that a Cozumel is writing a new history with a humanist government that listens to the the voice of the people and delivers.
