Cancún, Mexico | To Implement Two New Water Treatment Plants in the Hotel Zone

In order to solve infrastructure limit and prevent environmental strain in the Hotel Zone, Cancún  authorities and private developers are expanding local wastewater capabilities and will implement two new water treatment plants (WWTPs) along the upgrades at the Pok - Ta - Pok treatment plant, complexes that were  built 50 years ago by Fonatur, which are on the verge of collapse, work at low capacity and exceeded in their design, so they no longer comply with environmental parameters or current regulations.

The three plants are located in the areas of El Rey, Gucumatz, and Pok Ta Pok, they specifically provide water treatment services for the irrigation of garden and green areas in the Cancún Hotel Zone, through the Institute of Tourism Infrastructure Quintana Roo (Infratur).

The executive project contemplates a comprehensive investment of up $1 billion for waste recovery and sanitation infrastructure, financed with private equity funds from the Netherlands.

The technical development of the work will be in the charge of the Dutch Clean Tech company and will consist of the construction of two new plants.

The reconfiguration will allow the release of the land of one of the current plants, known as Gucumatz, which will be reintegrated into the patrimony of the government of Quintana Roo as an asset of value for the entity.

The two new facilities will be equipped with sequential biological reactors (SBRs) , an advanced technology that unifies the entire sanitation and setting process by modules within a single tank, ensuring automated control of the quality of the water resource.

Representative of Dutch Clean Tech, Oscar Vaca, said that, with the location of the land secured and the start of this procedures for the Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) , it is expected thaCancúnet the construction period of the new treatment plants will be extended throughout next year, to start formal operations towards the end of 2027.

In addition to these projects as reported by Reportur.mx, in April, the Hotel Zone of Cancún registered progress in the construction of a new sanitary collector that seeks to modernize the drainage system in one of the most important areas of the city. The work, with an investment of more than 29 million pesos (approximately $1.6 million) would be completed this month.

The expansion will nearly triple the airport’s annual passenger capacity from 7.5 million to 22 million, an ambitious multi - year project serves to maintain Nairobi’s status as East Africa’s leading aviation hub.

For the development of this major project Kenyan authorities have appointment the Trade and Development Bank (TB) and Africa Finance Corporation with construction expected to take three years.

Funding will be structured around airport - based revenue streams, with the two arrangers tasked with drawing in development finance institutions and commercial banks.

The expansion comes after Kenya was forced to pause the project in 2024 following the cancellation of a deal with India’s Adani Group after its founder’s indictment in the United States.

Key Features of the Expansion and Upgrades

•    New Terminal Construction: A brand - new passenger terminal building with modern support and processing facilities to accommodate millions of new travellers.
•    Runway and Airside Enhancements: Rehabilitation and construction of new parallel runways (up to 4.500 metres), expanded aprons, and rapid – exit taxiways to increase airfield capacity.
•    Airfield Throughout: Upgraded taxiway system designed to increase aircraft movements from 14 to 63 movements per hour.
•    Landside Improvements: Modernization of the airport’s landside access, which includes improved roadways, expanded vehicle parking, and upgraded passenger processing technologies.
•    Airport City and Logistics: Features an “Airport City” concept that includes a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) logistics parks, office complexes, and transit hotels.
