In order to solve infrastructure limit and prevent environmental strain in the Hotel Zone, Cancún authorities and private developers are expanding local wastewater capabilities and will implement two new water treatment plants (WWTPs) along the upgrades at the Pok - Ta - Pok treatment plant, complexes that were built 50 years ago by Fonatur, which are on the verge of collapse, work at low capacity and exceeded in their design, so they no longer comply with environmental parameters or current regulations.
The three plants are located in the areas of El Rey, Gucumatz, and Pok Ta Pok, they specifically provide water treatment services for the irrigation of garden and green areas in the Cancún Hotel Zone, through the Institute of Tourism Infrastructure Quintana Roo (Infratur).
