Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania | Over 600 Kilograms of Waste Cleared by Tourism Stakeholders on the Africa’s Highest Peak

Over 600 kilograms of waste were cleared from Mount Kilimajaro, a large dormant volcano located in the far north of Tanzania, right the border with Kenya, the highest peak in Africa and the highest free - standing mountain above sea level in the world at 5.895 m above sea level and 4.900 metres above its plateau base.

Mount Kilimanjaro fame also stems from its diverse ecosystems, including glaciers near the equator, which allow climbers to experience a “journey from the equator to the North Pole”, as they ascend through different climate zones, and it is also a major destination for adventure tourism, cultural significance, and very famous for its status as one of the Seven Summits.

This effort was part of  a four - day cleanup campaign organized by Zara Tanzania Adventures, a leading tour operator with 30+ years of expertise in luxury and budget safaris, Kilimanjaro climbs and customized adventures, in collaboration with other tourism stakeholders includes Mount Kilimanjaro Porters Society and the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), responsible for the management and conservation of all national parks in the country.

The campaign was part of an ongoing effort to combat pollution on Africa’s highest peak and keep it safe for both visitors and the workforce.

A team of 35 participants, including guides and porters targeted litter left by climbers and service providers. The waste included plastic bottles, food wrappers, cigarette butts, and shoe sole par sole particles among others.

Zara Tanzania Adventures said that the effort forms part of annual anti - pollution campaigns run with partners including Mount Kilimanjaro Porters Society, TANAPA through the responsiblefor the park’s tourism, conservation, and safety (KINAPA), and local NGOs, with 35 participants this year.

Industry representatives urged manufacturers to support future drives and strengthen waste management across the value chain, while TANAPA, praised the initiative as model other parks could emulate.
