The Dominican Republic | Announced Plans to Invest Considerably in Sports Tourism

The Dominican Republic through its tourism minister David Collado has announced plans to invest considerably in sports tourism to diversify its offerings and the government hopes to attract a wider range of tourists and encourage them to engage in activities beyond the traditional beach vacations.

Tourism Minister stated that more than US$2 billion will be dedicated next year to sponsorships, promotion and the organization of major international events.

The official confirmed that the country will host the Central American Games, and highlighted the upcoming opening of the Rafael Nadal Tennis Academy at the Zel Meliá hotel in Punta Cana, an attraction expected to draw future talents, top athletes and global tennis figures.

As part of the strategy, the government plans to position Cabarete, a resort town on the Dominican Republic’s northern coast as the Caribbean’s new “wave and wind capital,”, a global centre for kite and windsurfing wit plans to host relevant international competitions.

 Initiatives also include significant funding for major international sporting events like the PGA golf tournament in Punta Cana and ATP tennis circuit in Cap Cana, and building new sports infrastructure like baseball complexes designed for elite training and player accommodation. 

Also Santiago de los Caballeros will play a growing role, particularly through emerging football projects in development led by figures such as Diego Forlán, famous former Uruguayan football player and now manager and sports entrepreneur Manuel Estrella.

In addition the Minster pointed to Bávaro, Punta Cana, Puerto Plata and the capital of the country Santo Domingo as key hubs for sports tourism due to their infrastructure and capacity to host high - level events.

Finally, the Republic Dominican head of tourism said that golf alone attracted more than 400.000 tourists in 2024, thanks to world - class courses in Cap Cana, Punta Cana, and Playa Nueva Romana. This success positions the country as a global benchmark in golf, and the goal is to replicate that performance in other disciplines like tennis and water sports.
