A Coruña, relevant port city on a promontory in the Galicia region of northwest Spain, known for its iconic Roman lighthouse, the emblematic Tower of Hercules, which has sweeping coastal views and boasting a very attractive medieval old town will implement the tourist tax from 29th September 2025.
Coinciding with end of the summer season, the Spanish city will begin to apply a tourist tax of between €1 and €2.5 from Monday, September 29, a move that was announced on 28th August by the City Council.
The Councillor for Economy, José Manuel Lage, has stated that the new tax does not pose any obstaclee to tourism and that it does not tax hospitality establishments, but visitors, with very small amounts that contribute to improving public services.
According to EFE, renowned Spanish international news agency, after a meeting with the board of directors of A Coruña Accommodation Business Association (Hospeco), the Councillor for Economy said that the City Council tries to give all possible facilities to the hospitality sector of the city in this initial transition towards the implementation of the tax that is necessary because tourism is increasing steadily, generating a real impact on the neighbourhoods and on municipal services such as cleaning, waste collection or maintenance of public space.
The amount to be paid will depend on the type of establishment. In five - star and four - star superior hotels, guest must pay €2.5 per person per person per night.
Those staying in four - star, three - star, and two - star superior hotels as well in tourist accomodation, will pay €2.0 to their stay. In one - and two - star hotels, they will pay €1.5, and €1.0 in tourist rental homes. For cruise a fee of €1.5 is established and will be paid by the shipping companies.
Establishments will pay the fee through a digital platform through two annual self - assessments :
• Between 1 and 20 July, the fees corresponding to the first semester will be paid
• Between January 1 and 20, those corresponding to the second half of the year
There are several cases of zero payment, that is, they will not pay the fee :
• People attending congresses or training activities.
• Minors.
• Hospitalized people and their companions.
• Federated athletes in official competition.
• People with a disability of more than 65%.
• Participants in social reception or emergency programmes.
In the case of cruise ships, they will be exempt from the tax until 2026, because the packages of the current year are already sold.
People who can apply for these exemptions will be able to do so directly at the hotel establishment where they are staying, filling out a specific form that the City Council will distribute among the associations and groups of the sector in A Coruña.
