Marrakech, a former imperial city in western Morocco, a major centre economic centre of the North African country, the capital of the Marrakech - Safi region which lies west of the Atlas mountains, home to beautiful mosques, palaces and gardens, highlighted by its walled medieval city dating to the Berber Empire and a captivating medina densely packed, recorded 5 million overnight stays in H1 2025, a 6% increase from the same period last year, according to data proided by Morocco’s Tourism Observatory.
The city’s hotel occupancy rate reached 71% up from 68% in H1 2024, reinforcing its status in the country’s top tourist destination. June alone saw 784.073 overnight stays, with a 66% occupancy rate, slightly above the previous year’s figure.
Tourism growth in Marrakech is being fuelled by both domestic and international travellers, with international stays rising 16% and national tourism up 5%.
Marrakech tourism is booming, with millions of visitors who continue exploring its bustling souks looking for interesting traditional handicraft items, admiring its historical architecture and cultural sites like the iconic Jemaa el -Fnaa square, the Jardin Majorelle, Ben Yousef Madrasa, El Badi Palace and Bahia Palace, navigating maze - like streets in the old medina, or enjoying unforgettable rooftop views at sunset with the unique and inspiring images of the Atlas Mountains on the horizon.
Next to its incomparable charm, the city improved infrastructure, sustained marketing efforts, and air connectivity all factors that have underpinned Marrakech’s strong performance, supporting tourism - related employment and highlighting its resilience in the post – pandemic period.
Morocco' Tourism Observatory also indicated that Agadir and Casablanca followed as country’s second and third most visited cities, contributing to a national 13% rise in overnight stays behind Marrakech that with its eternal appeal continues to be a key driver for the tourism sector ot the Maghrebi Kingdom.
