Colombia, South American country bathed by the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean that boasts a unique cultural and historical heritage, ethnically diverse, ecologically one of the 17 megadiverse countries in the world, considered the most megadiverse per square kilometres, highlighted by stunning coastlines with marvelous beaches,crossed by the Andes mountains and with a large territory encompassed by the Amazon rainforest is going through a great period as far as tourism is concerned.
This is a thriving period that increases the confidence of visitors who find in this country a unique biodiversity, cities rich in history and attractions, delicious gastronomy, unique beaches and emerging destinations that fascinate at first sight international visitors.
Colombia's international image is in great prominence and on the occasion of the COP16 that was recently celebrated in Cali, vibrant city in the Valle del Cauca Department located between the western and central mountain ranges of the Andes and the main economic, industrial and financial center of the southwest of the nation, it allowed the world to learn even more about the immense potential and the great variety of ecosystems it has for the international visitors.
In terms of statistics on incoming tourism between January and September, the leading countries in terms of number of visitors were those from the United States of America representing 28.7%, followed by Mexico 8.5% and Ecuador 7.9%.
About the countries of origin that grew the most in the issue of visitors to Colombia were Honduras, Guatemala and Costa Rica with increases of 56%, 53% and 38% respectively compared to the same period in 2023.
The Executive Chairman of ANATO, the Colombian Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies, a non-profit, trade union entity that represents, defends and promotes the general interests of tourism and travel agencies in the country Paula Cortés Calle said that the tourism sector in collaboration with the National Government has done a great job in making the attractions of Colombia's destinations visible abroad.
All that has strengthened the identity, biodiversity and culture of the country and in turn has fostered interest in improving the conditions of the infrastructure to offer better experiences to visitors.
Although Antioquia, San Andrés and Bogotá were with 60%, 30% and 29% respectively are the destinations with the highest growth in terms of international visitor arrivals between January and September 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, there are emerging destinations.
Among those that are having a greatest impact as emergent destinations one is Guaviare, situated in the southern central region of the country, an area of tropical, semideciduous rainforest merging into the grassland plains of the Llanos, famous for geologic formations, ideal to plan cultural tours visiting stupendous places such as Cerro Azul Puerta del Chiribiquete,Villa Luz, Agua Bonita, Miraflores, Puerta del de Orion and the National Parks of Chiribiquete and Nukak among others.
A further one is Caquetá, located in Amazonas region, with a territory that begins in the Andean foothills and ends at the Araracuara escarpments in the heart of the Amazon rainforest with a its large number of rivers and streams, one of the areas with the greatest water wealth in the country with stunning places to visit such as Los Picharos National Natural Park, the Serrania de Chiribiquete, a spectacular group of mountains highlighted pristine valleys forming a natural paradise, the Araracuara Canyon and the Yari Plains.
The third is Amazonas department in the south of the country made up entirely of territory of the Amazon Rainforest with the southern portion of the land south of the Putumayo river called "Amazonian Trapezium" which includes the triple border of Colombia, Peru and Brazil and its southern limit is the Amazon River, a territory which boasts very attractive centres such as La Chorrera and Leticia and stupendous national parks such as Amacayacu, Cahuinari, Rio Puré and Yaigojé Apaporis.
The Executive Chairman of ANATO commented that through tourism cultural understanding is promoted, foreign exchange income is generated, and the development of the national economy has a boost.
For this reason, ANATO, with its travel agencies, has generated actions as educational trips, with which to try to strengthen the offer of suppliers of products and services to open doors to other destinations that theorically do not have a great tourist potential but are worth discovering.
