Cuenca, captivating city in southern Ecuador's
Andes mountains, head of the canton of the same name and capital of the
province of Azuay, well known for its dramatic landscapes, the stunning
Tomebamba River waterfront, nicknamed "Athens of Ecuador" for its
architecture, contribution to Ecuadorian arts, science and literature and its
cultural diversity, as part of its commitment to the development of sustainable
tourism received a mission from the French cooperation organization Sites &
Cités, an association created in 2000 to bring together towns and groups of
municipalities with a remarkable heritage site and labeled territories will bring a
notable support for the strengthening of Cuenca's tourism and its relevant historical heritage.
The meeting with Sites & Cités was aimed to promote the exchange of experiences on the management of heritage tourism between Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and France with special focus on enhancing the value the old towns and the cultural richness of the participating cities.
In Ecuador the French Association collaborates with Ministry of Tourism and cities as the capital of the country Quito, Loja and now Cuenca are in a partnership to strengthen the tourism offer based in historical heritage.
During their visit to Cuenca, the member of the organization based in Bordeaux toured various sites of cultural, tourist and gastronomic interest with the main purpose of identifying areas for improvement and generating joint projects to reinforce heritage tourism in the city.
Among the points visited were the Ruins of Todos Santos, the Puente Roto, the Francisco Sojos steps, the Remigio Crespo Municipal Museum, the Casa Paredes Sombrero Museum and the 10 de Agosto Market, among others, all sites which stand out for their notable historical and cultural value.
The Minister of Tourism of Ecuador Mateo Estrella participated in a meeting with the French delegation in which he underlined the importance of the visit and the relevance of heritage tourism as a main driver of economic and social development in the nation.
At that meeting the commitment of the Ecuadorian government to the promotion of projects that promote tourism that respects and values the cultural identity and natural resources heritage was reaffirmed.
The members of the mission in addition participated to the Presentation Emblematic Projects of the Municipal Tourism Foundation for Cuenca where advances were presented on issues of sustainability, urban planning, and the integration of culture with tourism and the environment.
This presentation allowed the French delegates to learn about the work being done in Cuenca to promote responsible and accessible tourism, which is turn drives local development.
The visit and the agreement reached during these
two days reflect the effort of the Ministry of Tourism of Ecuador to
consolidate relations with international organizations that support the growth
of the tourism sector in the country.
With the support of entities of relevance as Sites & Cités, Ecuador is undoubtedly advancing in a new, exciting stage in its tourism industry that not only attracts visitors, but also promote the social and economic growth of the nation through the appreciation of its notable, historical and cultural heritage.
