Bulgaria - Romania | The Two Eastern European Countries Have Officially Become Members of the Schenghen Area

In a historic act on New Year's Day 2025, Bulgaria and Romania, two Eastern European countries have officially become members of the Schenghen Area with the European Union's decision to lift internal land border controls with both nations marking a significant step in European integration, guaranteeing the free movement of millions of citizens and boosting economic efficiency.

The path linked to Schenghen accession began in 2011, when Bulgaria and Romania first met the European Commission's accession conditions, however the candidacy faced numerous obstacles, includi--ng objections from Austria over concerns about irregular immigrations and opposition from the Netherlands to Bulgaria's preparation.

After years of negotiations and including reforms, EU interior ministers gave their final approval for accession in December 2024 and this achievement underscores the relevance of perseverance in overcoming political and administrative obstacles.

Since 1st January 2025, internal land border control between Bulgaria and Romania have been eliminated, marking the completion of their integration into the Schenghen area.

This follows the earlier removal of air and sea border controls, further facilitating the smooth flow of travel and trade, although random document checks will continue temporarily to deter criminal activity, the removal of fixed border controls will significantly reduce travel and transport times and the removal of border controls is particularly transformative for regional connectivity.

Bulgarian and Romanian citizens have welcomed the news, particularly those who frequently travel by car or transport goods across borders and eliminating long queues at 30 land border checkpoints will save valuable time and reduce costs for businesses involved in cross - border trade.

Truck drivers and logistic companies, which previously faced delays or several days at borders, are expected to benefit the most and by streamlining the flow of goods, Schenghen membership will improve the economic competiveness of both nations.

Export oriented companies, particulary in sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing and automotive parts, expect significant cost reduction through faster transit times.

Concerning tourism, it is undoubtedly a vital sector for both Bulgaria and Romania and it is also on the way to flourishing. With unrestricted land travel, neighboring countries are expected to see an influx of visitors exploring the regional's historical landmarks, cultural sites, and natural beauty of this area of Europe.

The smooth movement of travellers across borders is likely to boost local economies by encouraging more spending on hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions.
