Bema | Unforgettable Valtellina Landscapes

Bema, charming municipality in the province of Sondrio in the beautiful Valtellina a short distance from the captivating center of Morbegno located at an altitude of 800.0 meters above sea level in the picturesque Bitto Valley where a stream of the same name flows that has carved with its course the entire territory on the Orobic Valtellina side on the slopes of Pizzo Berro, a land always ready to surprise any visitor with its fairytale Alpine landscapes but also a historical and artistic attraction of great importance.

This locality lies on a rugged rocky spur at the confluence of the valleys of Albaredo, Gerola and Bitto within the Orobie Valtellinesi Park, an area where you come into contact with a picturesque reality at the foot of the towering and majestic Alps that mark the border with neighboring Switzerland.

Just five minutes from the core of Bema stands the beautiful Chiesa di San Rocco, a church erected at the beginning of the 16th century and mentioned in historical-ecclesiastical documents in 1589 by Bishop Feliciano Ninguarda following his pastoral visit. Restored in some occasions inthe contemporary age between the 50s and 60s, inside you can admire splendid sixteenth-century frescoes by Lombard school.

Along the main road that leads to the inhabited center you can stop at an attractive wooden statue depicting a Madonna and Child and then reaching the Chiesa Parrcchiale di San Bartolomeo dating back to the 17th century with a nave and characterized by a large gabled façade.

Inside you can appreciate various fine works in polychrome marbles, three beautiful chapels and the main altar boasting the presence of a wonderful altarpiece created by an unknown artist of the sixteenth century depicting as protagonists the Saints Bartholomew, Rocco and Sebastian and the immense painting of the Nativitymade by Ulisse Sartini.

An aspect that delights everyone  about Bema is its medieval origin enlivened by suggestive cobblestone alleys, characteristic streets lined with houses built in stone and wood with flowered balconies, stairways that lead to the typical Cantunn, fountains and washhouses that represent the popular and true soul of a small town where everything appears unchanged as many centuries ago and even the smallest details are simply fascinating.

Nearby I recommend to reach the Passo Marco which with its 1992 meters of altitude is an ideal destination for cyclists, mountain bikers and trekkers, a pass that links the province of Sondrio to that of Bergamo offering breathtaking views of Sondrio, Bergamo and Swiss Alps.

Another area of great beauty is around the Tartano Pass with its height of 2,124 meters which offers unforgettable views over much of the Valtellina area and on the Bergamo side contemplating magnificent views of the Orobic Alps.

Bema is also famous for its delicious porcini mushrooms harvested in the coniferous forests of the Orobie Alps. The fungus in question is made up of the dissected or whole carpophores of Boletus Edulis belonging to the group Boletus Aereus, Boletus Reticulatus and Boletus Pinicola which grows next to tall trees and finds in the local territory a very benevolent place for its reproduction.

This very special mushroom brings together various properties, in the edible field it is very versatile as well as being very eclectic for the elaboration of side dishes in second courses or inserted in single dishes next to polenta, stews and soups.

Its versatilitymakes it perfect for the preparation of sauces, excellent if grilled, excellent in mixed appetizers, superb if preserved in oil or in brine and after being dried divine absolutely divine as an ingredient in risottos.

To pay  homage to this product the Pro Loco body of the community organizes the Mushroom Festival which this year will celebrate its 38th edition from 07 to 08 September, an eventwith this famous edible product is the absolute protagonist.

You will be able to visit stands and the mycological exhibition attended by experts who will introduce the excellent qualities of this Porcini Mushroom and discover other delights as the famous Bitto cheese, the iconic Bresaola, the emblematic Pizzoccheri and excellent wines as Sassella and Inferno.

The typical Cantunn will offer different types of Valtellina Grappa and this event is enlivened by musical entertainment, dances and competitions of various types as well as the presence of exhibitors linked to painting, crafts, experts in tourism, culture, catering and services, transmitting to visitors countless proposals to get to know the territory of the province of Sondrio in depth in all its main aspects.

Visiting Bema is a wonderful experience for every visitor, art, nature, unforgettable alpine landscapes, excellent gastronomy, a perfect combination for a wonderful tourism or even a stay discovering the infinite beauties of Valtellina.
