The European Commission, EC, the primary executive arm of the European Union founded in 1958 and headqurterred in Brussels has presented the names of the seven cities that have been chosen as finalists for the European Capital of Smart Tourism 2025 award.
This initiative is fundamentally based on the experience of a preparatory action proposed by the European Parliament delivering this prestigious award given to a city that demonstrates an exceptional commitment to an assiduous action capable of shaping the future of sustainable and innovative tourism.
Another essential aspect is to stimulate networking and the exchange of good practices between smart tourism destinations in order to promote large-scale innovation in European tourism.
The European Capital of Smart Tourism is an EU initiative that rewards cities for their innovative approaches in areas such as accessibility, digitalisation, sustainability, cultural heritage and creativity.
The European Commission, after a careful analysis decided to expand the shortlist of candidates from four to seven cities for the achievement of this award because several locations have submitted high-quality applications with attractive projects and programs, obtaining the same score during the preliminary evaluation process.
From a pool of 21 candidates from 10 countries, the seven finalist cities selected to achieve the coveted European Capital of Smart Tourism award are in alphabetical order: Brussels - Belgium, Genoa - Italy, Konya - Turkey, Lahti - Finland, Lviv - Ukraine, Porto - Portugal and Turin - Italy.
These finalist cities will be invited to submit their applications to a European jury on 26th and 27th November 2024, the dates on which the scrutiny and final vote will take place to select the chosen and winner of the title European Capital of Smart Tourism 2025.
The winning cities will receive a platform to showcase their outstanding practices to the world, a report entitled "Leading Examples of Smart Tourism Practises in Europe" , extensive support in communication and branding that will include the development of a promotional video, the Promotion Strategy; installation of a sculpture with a label in the city, the implementation of promotional campaigns aimed at increasing visibility at the European Community and global level.
A further highlight is a series of EU Smart Tourism podcasts that features discussions with the winners of the European Smart Tourism competition featuring the cities selected for the award and representatives of the European Commission.
Since 2018, the European Capital of Smart Tourism competition has provided a platform to highlight exceptional practices and achievements in tourism.
In previous editions, Dublin was selected as the European Capital of Smart Tourism in 2024, the other winners were chronologically Seville and Paphos in 2023, Valencia and Bordeaux in 2022, Malaga and Gothenburg in 2020 and Helsinki and Lyon in 2019.
