The Azores – Portugal | Recognition as an EarthCheck Reference Destination

 

The Azores, one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal along with Madeira, an archipelago composed of nine volcanic islands in the Macaronesia region of the North Atlantic Ocean characterized by suggestive fishing villages, dramatic, coastal landscapes and a varied biodiversity has been recognized as an Earthcheck 2024 reference destination.

The news after this important recognition was disclosed by the Regional Government which pointed out that the Azores have been carefully selected to monitor performance in key environmental areas and the impact on social performance.

 EarthCheck, sustainable tourism company founded in 1987, headquartred in Brisbane - Queensland - Australia globally recognised group specialising in benchmarking, certification and advisory services with its primary focus in the environmental and cientific dimensions of the travel and tourism industry sector has evaluated 15 indicators elevating the Portuguese archipelago to the highest reference level, declaration also confirmed by a statement issued by the Regional Government.

Above the reference levels that led the Azores to be recognized as an EarthCheck 2024 Reference Destination are the following segments: greenhouse gas emissions, drinking water consumption, waste sent to landfills, percentage analysis of compliant waters, habitat conservation and socioeconomic benefits.

The Regional Councillor for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructure of the Azores Berta Cabral commented that these results once again demonstrate a positive evolution even having one more indicator above the reference levels and maintaining the best practices highlighted.

This path of continuous improvement is something to be proud result that is due to an assiduous application of commitment, conviction and determination.
