Egypt | Tourism on the Rise with Russian Market Bookings Up 40%

 

Egypt, country linking Northeast Africa with the Middle East through a land bridge formed by the Sinai Peninsula which has always been a very important tourist destination due to its rich historical and cultural heritage linked to an iconic, millenary civilization, a country with numerous tourist resources on the Mediterranean and Red Seas predicts that the 2024 - 2025 winter season will surpass the previous one which, as is known, had to face major challenges due to the Gaza conflict and limited transportation options.

A relevant figure comes from Egyptian tour companies that have reported that most of the travel packages corresponding to the autumn season are sold out, also informing that sales have increased by more than 40% compared to the same period in 2023 due to the considerable volume of bookings coming from the Russian Federation.

This boom is also due to efforts to expand charter flights linking Russia to the North African country confirmed by the increase in flight schedules from November 2024 to March 2025 planned by Anex Tour, well known international tour operator, specialist to provide affordable holidays with quality and Intourist, full service leading travel agency, one of the most important inbound operators in Egypt now covering a dozen Russian cities up from seven previously.

EgyptAir the state - owned flag carrier of Egypt has also focused on the Russian market by establishing twice-weekly flights from Moscow and once a week from St. Petersburg with an increase in frequency of twice a week with the schedule expected to last until the end of March 2025.

Also noteworthy are the operations of Space Travel, an operator that has secured a significant block of seats on Red Sea Airlines flights, private airline headquartered in Cairo with connections from Moscow to Sharm – El -  Sheikh, famous resort town, situated between the Red Sea and the desert of the Sinai Peninsula, well known for its comfortable, luxury resorts and hotels,  sheltered, sandy beaches, emerald waters and coral reefs.

In comparison with other destinations, for example Thailand accounts for just under 10% while the United Arab Emirates account for 5.2%.

Nowadays Egypt has almost 1.330 hotels, of which a third are five-star accommodation and Sharm - El - Sheikh remains the main destination in Egypt with 55% of tourists booking tours through the company of Sergey Agafonov, General Director of the Last Minute Travel Store chain and President of the Russian Tourism Association planning to visit this destination.

Other useful data to understand the market, the average cost of a holiday in Sharm - El - Sheikh is 219.000 rubles, a destination that in popularity is followed by Hurghada where the average price of a package for two people has risen from 175,000 to 210,000 rubles with its market share increasing from 31% to 34% in 2024 and other highly sought-after locations such as Makadi, Sahl Hasheesh and Soma Bay complete the list of preferred destinations.

Generally, most tourists from the Russian Federation prefer accommodation in five-star hotels, due to comfort, wide range of services offered and especially since the demand for luxury stays has significantly increased in 2024 and currently 59% of tourists from this geographical area opt for more expensive hotels compared to 52% the previous year.

As for all-inclusive packages, they have long remained the most popular formula and option for travelers.

In Sletat.ru, the group of companies that in addition helps travel agents effectively Egypt's share of total sales for the autumn and winter seasons has increased significantly from 7% to 17% with an average reserve of about 223.000 rubles.

A relevant figure from this company reveals  that more than half of bookings correspond to five-star hotels whose share has increased from 54% in 2023 to 61% this year.
