way to being smart tourist destinations having a technological infrastructure tha contributes to the development
of sustainable tourism with relevant initiatives.
The program named "Smart Tourist Destination: Innovation and Sustainability for the Future" was developed at the beginning of the month on the island of Santa Cruz, also known as indefatigable island, the most populous and second - largest island in the Galápagos archipelago, as part of the actions implemented by the Ministry of Tourism to position the country as world benchmark in sustainable and smart tourism.
During the event of the programme presentation the Minister of Tourism Mateo Estrella announced that the State portfolio and the Governing Council of the Special Regime of Galápagos became Institutional Members of the Ibero - American Network of DTI, the Ibero – American Network of Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal and Isabela as Observer Members.
The Minister when delivering the membership of the Ibero - American DTI Network, said that these advances demonstrate the leadership and vision of the Galápagos's local autorithies,who have understood that sustainability and technology are inseparable allies to protect amnd project this unique paradise to the world.
This important event featured series of conferences regarding the DTI model, the importance of this approach in modern tourism, the opportunities for technological development and the innovative practices implemented in the Galápagos's archipelago for the conservation of the destination, emphasising that Smart Tourist Destinations also seek to facilitate the interaction and integration of the visitor to increase the quality of their experience and improve the quality of life of the hosts.
The DTI project, promoted by Ministry of Tourism, has the advice of the State Mercantile Society for the Management of Innovation and Tourism Technologies, S.A.M.P, SEGGITUR of Spain, the Ibero – American Network of Smart Tourist Destinations and the Inter - American Development Bank through its future Tourism program.
Currently some Ecuardorian cities, as the capital of the country Quito and Cuenca, centre located in southern Ecuador's Andes mountains are also working on the implementation of the DTI model, marking a fundamental step for the development of sustainable tourism in the country.
