Montevideo, Uruguay's capital and major city situated on the southern coast of the country, on the northeastern of the Rio del la Plata River facing a wide bay, centre which has preserved European architecture being considered one of the cities with the most art deco influence, hub of commerce, finance and cultural anchor of a vast metropolitan area through the Department Board of the city, reported the approval of important modifications to decree 36852 of 2018, which adjusts the regulations that regulate the tourist tax of the city.
This is intended to align it with the new national provisions establidhed by law No. 20352 of 19th September 2024.
Thus, the basis for calculating the rate is redefined, which eliminates its link with the star category of hotels, so a fixed amount is established applicable to all tourist accommodation including hotels and properties intended for tourist use, adapting to the transformation of the sector.
Progress is also being made in the adjustment of the definition of the taxable person, who is no longer known as a "tourist" to be considered as a person registered with an international identificatgion document.
Concerning the funds raised by this tax, they will also be used to support the tourism sector in times of crisis and to consolidate Montevideo, as a Smart Tourist Destination, prioritizing areas such as accessibility, governance, innovation, sustainability and technology.
