Historically the glorious Free Hanseatic City of Bremen is part of one of the German states formed even before the year 1945 and, after the Republic of San Marino previously to be incorporated in  the Deutschland Bundesrepublik ,the German Federation State it was is the oldest city-republic in the world still in existence.

Bremen boasts the title of Hansestadt,Hanseatic City, situated on the banks the  Weser river at approximately 60,0 km of the Northern Sea and the presence of that waterway which is navigable by large ships allowing the existence of of a huge harbour makes that German centre the second commercial port of Germany after Hamburg and also for that considered it is considered as the main doorway to discover the northern of the country.

Definitely that course of waters is another highlight and it was since the beginning of the establishment of the first settlement official settlement an important source of  international trade and commerce. In addition that river creates a very suggestive atmosphere flanked by a splendid promenade, historic houses and captivating fluvial  quarters making Bremen a site full of great surprises.

With its 570,000 inhabitants and the 130,000 inhabitants living the nearest Bremerhaven, together they form the smallest of the 16 Land of the German State Confederation. The city consists of two distinctive distinct areas, the first is Altstadt the old city on the right bank of the river and the second is Neustadt the new urban set developed  on the left side of the Weser and both areas are connected by three main bridges.

Organised in five Bezirke ,districts which in turn are subdivided int 23  Stadtteile sort of neighbourhoods  and 81 Ortseile consisting in a kind of sub.boroughs Bremen has been along its history the German gateway to the North Sea and also for that it has always been identified as  very cosmopolitan centre,a city which shows many faces, new and innovative, historic and modern, busy but at the same time very livable with over than 1000 years of history.

It is a centre which has an undeniable charm and always with a look towards the future thanks to its several new proposals and technological complexes next to important companies which find in that centre of Germany a very fertile land to develop their new businesses and launching on international scale their projects focused in a vast range of industry niches.

Mentioned for the first time more than 1200 years ago the history of Bremen has been rich of of events and several times pretty troubled.Founded in the early Middle Ages it was a solid and relevant member of the famed Hanseatic League but also alternately expelled in different historic periods from that influential and powerful mercantile network which dominated the North European maritime routes with its intense trade generating strategic historic markets since medieval times.

Occupied by the French troops of Napoleon  and by the British Army after the 2nd World War who left its place to the American troops later also the past remote and more recent is undoubtedly very cosmopolitan sue all those different occupations.

One of the most relevant periods lived by Bremen was the 17th century when in the year 1646 it was elevated as  Free Imperial City and since the year 1806 it was called the Free Hanseatic City while its "sister"·Bremerhaven is pretty younger and it  was founded later, exactly in the year 1827 and declared a city 24 years later in 1851 and the Parliament of the Land takes the traditional designation of city council of Bremen, the state government which is called Senate.

Those centuries were characterised by an intense life, its harbour was only second to Hamburg and constantly elevated as one of the major commercial ports of the Continent with a particular devotion to plan a very organised  system of transit and dock of ships of different capacity.

Those operations opened new horizons to interested merchants who decided to use those waters as preferential route establishing their fleets moored in that harbour which also progressively developed spaces with appropriate quays and spaces to host a large range of vessels.

After the 2nd World War Bremen became the main port of the USA occupation force, until December 1946 and in 1947 was formed an enclave within the British zone of influence,it is since then when the city moved under official American administration.

The years corresponding to the post war period were characterised by the research for a repositioning statement which would allow the preservation of autonomy as a city state, the decline of shipbuilding and the loss of importance of the port demanded the development of new economic activities in the territory.

The old city the Altstadt is certainly one of the most attractive municipal area characterised by its large grid of narrow and winding streets and with the presence of medieval and post medieval buildings showing a stunning variety of relevant architectonic styles.

Among the most outstanding symbols in that old area we can mention is the Gothic- Romanesque Kathedral Sankt Petri St.Peter Cathedral, the Renaissance Rathaus,a superb construction consisting in the Town Hall and  the Schütting the old market, the statue of Roland and the famous and historic Böttcherstrasse, a captivating street situated in the charming Schnoor district.

There are those who prefer the Bremen fairytale, one that allows them to boast the reputation of a city of musicians depicted by the Brothers Grimm with their popular and famed fairytale novel honoured with a statue, one undisputed emblematic icon of the city along with that of Roland, despite that the historic centre is a shining gem in every corner of its urban set.

The  Neustadt  has been well designed with modern buildings, several  shops and hosting a big number of museums.A relevant harbour which regained its old splendour in terms of shipping is another of its superb highlights but it is well known to be focused in activities linked to international trade relations and sophisticated products industries are the foundation of modern economic life of Bremen.

Many companies have developed important businesses in the new city formed a very famous complex  as one of the food and luxury goods trade centres more relevant of Germany and in Neustadt you will notice the presence of several  headquarters and offices of famous Multinational holdings and enterprises representing some of the most important international brands.

The city has also developed relevant industries one of them is linked to aerospace navigation where are designed and built essential components for missiles, satellites and Airbuses making of Bremen one of the most modern centres in the world regarding that activity.

Tourism is another industry which has a relevant and considerable importance and Bremen with Lübeck and Hamburg form that distinctive and emblematic Hanseatic triangle cradle of a historic axis with a more than relevant past to combine in itineraries of a high cultural content.

That centre it is still a city of culture thanks to the wide range of exhibitions, galleries and museums devoted to history, art, but also with others strongly focused to science ethnology and trade, and furthermore the lively cultural local life is enriched by a large number of theatres and venues which host important performances and musicals throughout the year making it a destination simply irresistible to find a little bit of everything in terms of tourism and leisure.

An excellent start point for a great visit and very suggested is from  the majestic Rathaus the Bremen Town Hall,an impressive brick construction erected in Gothic Style with an imposing facade over 600 years old showing in all its grandeur and highlighted in its interior by sumptuous halls in Renaissance style which are among the main attractions..

The majestic front facade of that superb construction was completed in the year 1612 by Lüder Von Bentheim and decorated with statues depicting Charlemagne, the seven electors, the four major prophets four essays and St.Peter.The ones you see nowadays however are only copies,as the originals have been transferred to the Focke Museum which also hosts a collection of pictures, objects, documentaries, ancient sculptures and objects on the history of Bremen and its surroundings.

Worth a visit the impressive rooms authentic masterpieces and jewels starting from the Obere Halle  the Upper Room well known also as Grosse Halle, the Great Hall boasting a length of 40,0 metres and a width of 15,0 metres. That is the site in which laws and decrees were approved since old times and it was since its inception the focal point and beating heart of the politic life of Bremen.

That wing of the building is decorated with two frescoes attributed to Bartholomäus Bruyn the Elder, depicting The Judgement of Solomon and The Emperor and Bishop and with modes of ships, dated the 16th and 18th century, hanging from the ceiling.

Notable is all the the set of that diamond of architecture and artistic works of relevant importance, all is in perfect harmony including the frescoes are totally integrated in that luminous space very impressive at first sight.

Another site of superb value is the magnificent Güldenkammer the Golden Hall developed in pure Jugendstil style a kind of German Art Nouveau very famous in Munich (in the case you are interested I wrote something about that wonderful movement in a post) which consists in large lounge highlighted by a huge of carpet and fireplace. That space offers considerable visual effects for its fine architectonic lines and a perfect symmetry of the architectonic elements making it very scenic and unique in its kind.

Untere Rathaushalle,is  the lower room of the Town Hall developed along three aisles and it is connected to the Obere Halle by a beautiful and stylish wooden staircase. On the western side of the building is situated the entrance to the Rastkeller consisting in the Cellar of City Hall an impressive wine cellar which contains over 650 bottles of German wine, being the largest collection in Germany in that kind.

That place also hosts a restaurant dated the early 15th century in which you can see barrels which are richly decorated and the oldest is dated the year 1723.The restaurant opens its doors at 11.00 am and closes at midnight.

Another relevant room which worth to be visited  is the Keller-Hauff richly decorated with frescoes by Max Slevogt inspired by the novels by Wilhelm Hauss. That historic building is considered among the most beautiful Town Halls of the entire Germany and it is undoubtedly one of the most shining architectonic jewels of the city.

Next to that great masterpiece lies the impressive statue of Roland which represents the symbol of freedom. The Statue of that famed Paladin was erected  in commemoration of that Epic man  who founded the city and as you know that notorious character was the grandson of Charlemagne the famous Carolingian Emperor.

The iconic hero is holding the sword of justice as clear symbol of defence of essential concepts and
a shield with an eagle with two heads which bears the motto which refers to the edict which gave Bremen the city status and in which you can read: ""Ich kann Ihnen sagen, die Freiheit  Wahrheit, daß Prinz Charles und einige hat diesen Ort gegeben  das Gott dankbar zu sein, ist mein Rat" which translated is "I can tell you the truth that liberty which the Prince Charles has given to this place and to be grateful to God,this is my advice".

The monument was built in limestone measuring over 10,0 metres in height while the only statue is almost 6,0 meters high and it stands on a high pedestal.facing the Cathedral of Bremen the distinctive seat of the Archbishopric one of the authorities who hindered the autonomy of the city.

Outside the Town Hall you can also admire one of the most famous local landmarks the Bremen Musicians by Gerhardt Marcks and made in the year 1961 inspired by the fairytale novel by the Brothers Grimm and it is undoubtedly more than a symbol which attracts a multitude of tourists also for the history that sculpture represents not only as literary work but also as a moral of life.

That monument is dedicated to those famous musicians, characters corresponding to a donkey,a dog,a cat and a rooster placed on the west side of the City Hall and it is probably the most photographed site.It is also an eternal tribute to the brothers Grimm writers and creators of that successful novel which conquered the world but also in its kind another representation and recognition in the story of Bremen as a land of freedom.

The story as you which has the title Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten (,he Musicians of Bremen says about four animals, the rooster Frank,a dog named Robert,Ramon the donkey and a cat called Agatha.Farmer's willing to sacrifice them for being old and those animals which were in an advanced age and considered at the end of their lives without knowing what to do and disillusioned by the cruelty of the owners were extremely scared of a uncertain future and destiny.

They decided to run away, escaping far from a sad end with the illusion to continue to live and to be free and much more with the desire to be musicians. On the way to the city of Bremen, the rooster, the donkey and the dog met Agatha the cat which also avoids cruelty and human contempt.

They became friends and from a proposal launched by the donkey they formed  a sort of  band with the intention to continue to live overcoming different obstacles not only triggered of the conflicts of the farm and in the forest they met a thief .

The four friends did not stop to follow that man reaching his house and after the thief flees in crazy situations they decided to stay there enjoying the music and friendship until the end of their lives. And ..Do not forget to touch the right leg of the donkey making a wish,it is like to launch a coin in the Fontana di Trevi in Rome doing that you will express the desire to return to Bremen and doing that it is also considered something bringing good luck.

That monument represents a large set of human topics as signal of freedom, friendship, solidarity, support,
but also that one to face the destiny despite the age,a message which saw from other aspects it also transmits that all is possible and nothing is impossible supported by enthusiasm and passion that for those animals were the music and an unceasing desire not only to survive but to live happy.

Marktplatz is the fantastic and scenic Market Square, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO and pride of Bremen inhabitants. That is the iconic place in which took place the market since the times of the Hanseatic League in which they also meet themselves to arrange new routes and strategies for their trades since medieval times.

On the same square is situated the Parliament building and also the stupendous Kathedral Sankt-Petri Dom dated 13th century belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran worship and erected in a magnificent early Gothic style.

That beautiful and majestic Religious construction despite was ended in the 13th century was built in the 11th century with most of the additions made two centuries later. All that happened due to a former provisional lack of funds to continue the works and in another historic step to complete it and with the revival concepts to embellish furthermore that stunning Sacred complex.

That wonderful construction presents on its facade the results of impressive artistic and architectonic masterpieces absolutely advanced for lines and concepts of that period, two high towers on the sides of the central body perfectly identical with five floors of high curved windows, the last ones placed beneath vague scenic conical roofs.

In the centre of the facade you can admire a marvellous rose windows inserted above magnificent arcades highlighting the doorways. You will notice the outstanding symmetry between spaces and elements, nothing bizarre or peculiar all was studied to surprise.

In its interior you can admire a majestic nave flanked by high splendid arcades, beautiful columns and stunning carvings. The scenic central hallway leads to the altar placed in a apse illuminated by three stained glass windows which in combination with beautiful decorated chandeliers give a stupendous luminosity to the spaces.

Another great highlights is also the ceiling with a set of superb vaults in succession starting from the entrance and ending in correspondence of a scenic niche. In the Cathedral you can also visit the crypts which are the oldest part of the complex and climbing the tower from where on its summit you can enjoy a superb panoramic view of the entire city.

In Markplatz you can also admire the majestic and elegant Palace called Schütting which is the Bremen's medieval  Building of the Chamber of Commerce,a beautiful post medieval construction dated 1537 represented in an outstanding and typical Flemish Renaissance style.

Not far from that emblematic square you can admire Stadwaage another very distinctive building of the city. That palace was erected in the late 16th century showing a marvellous gable roof over a charming ample facade,a construction of magnificent beauty and in modern times it started to be used as a  Philharmonic Hall. Many concerts are celebrated there for the great acoustic that structure provides and also very suitable for vocal choirs.

Böttcherstrasse is undoubtedly one of the most interesting and captivating streets of Bremen,a very charming and  picturesque hallway which is also a relevant connection linking Marktplatz to the river Weser. The buildings lined along that stupendous artery were erected in various architectonic styles and in addition to their beautiful exteriors they are a relevant patrimony of the cultural and local historic heritage of Bremen.

That street gained considerable importance in the Middle Ages when it was one the main accessible transit between the old town and the port for the merchants and traders during the golden ages of the Hanseatic League  and it was also the core and major centre of the the local artisans especially dedicated to the manufacturers of barrels, hence the name.

In 1902 a warehouse of Böttcherstrasse dated 14th century was bought by Ludwig Roselius, a coffee company owner of the future famous HAG. Roselius also purchased other buildings however that he entrusted to demolish some of them  and the architect and sculptor Bernhard Hoetger with a project of reconstruction  developed between 1922 and 1933 new constructions which gave the current image and aspect you can admire nowadays.

During the 2nd World War,the Nazi government considered that street  an example of degenerated art and in the year 1944 many houses were destroyed or severely damaged by bombing. The reconstruction of the facades of the major part of the buildings took place nine years later.

In the year 1989, the street was purchased by the famous German Bank Sparkasse Bremen who gave birth to a relevant and magnificent work of revival focused on a massive restoration to reestablish the historic value of those constructions successfully completed ten years later in the year 1999.

The entrance to the street is marked by a bas-relief depicting the Archangel Michael slaying the dragon, by Bernhard Hoetger.Böttcherstrasse is approximately 110,0 metres long,it is characterised by brick high houses  mostly dated the reconstruction of the 20th century but which reflect and respect the style of the Hanseatic cities using similar materials and execution of architectonic lines as replica of older constructions to create an architectonic harmony with rest of the environment.

All that is certainly an important detail because in the course of its history works and changes never altered or broken the appearance of the local scenery keeping an integral special charm in which nothing of unusual or peculiar was established.
.
The buildings along the way today are mainly small shops, you can also find a small  Casino and a Museum dedicated to the painter Paula Modersohn-Becker which hosts from time to time temporary exhibitions and along that attractive street some places where you can chose to have lunch or dinner.

If you are an art lover it is a very suggested place to admire relevant works in particular that one mentioned by a talented artist over the average media and considered one of the most prestigious Renaissance talents in the German Renaissance movement.

Do not miss to take a look also in that scenic street to the fantastic porcelain carillon with bells,a rotating turret sample, while sounding melodies, ten panels carved with scenes commemorating different trips across the Atlantic starting from Bremen. You can see that, daily, every hour between 12.00 and 18.00 hours from 1st January 1st to April 30th only at 12,00, 15.00 and 18,00 hours and the mechanism in case of frost does not work.
