Montreux-Switzerland | Prestigious Town with Musical Notes All Around.

Montreux is since long time ago one of the most famous and distinguished destinations in Switzerland,a prestigious town with musical notes all around because music found its home in that resort located on the magnificent shore of Lake Geneva.

The popular Jazz Festival since the 60s and several artists of immense international level are or were protagonists along the coastline the Vaud Riviera in that iconic place, ideal place for their stays and unforgettable performances which consecrated that resort as a music sanctuary.

Considered one of the most charming and captivating Swiss resorts for its old and recent history,Montreux never lost the fame and popularity which gained thanks to the many events it hosted and hosts making it a point of reference of an active cultural life.

That Swiss centre is also famous for its dealings with the world of entertainment, hosting several important  festivals as well as being linked to the biography of many great artists.

With its 26.000 inhabitants Montreux since  the second half of the 19 century and more in the early 20th century began to be a popular holiday resort mainly for English,American and German tourists who were immediately attracted by the beautiful views of that place located on Lake Lemán.

The over 50 kilometres of longitude of that magnificent waters basin embraces the peaks of the French Alps and definitely another relevant aspect is its mild climate all year so appreciated by a multitude of people combined with its rich historic patrimony and a wide cultural calendar presents in several resorts

An important highlight of Montreux which deserves to be mentioned is also its splendid natural environment which conquers everyone.

Located at the foot of  the Rochers de Naye which with its 2025,0 metres dominates the resort, bordered by other charming and pleasant small towns, such as Blonay,Haut Intyamon and Veytaux in a land packed by picturesque terraces of vineyards and verdant forests along the lake are a spectacular frame giving that place a fairytale image.

Historically the earliest traces of the former settlement are dated before the Christian era and during some excavations were found remains of a settlement of the late Bronze Age.

Under Roman rule were built the major former roads from the Great St. Bernard Pass Aventicum the current Avenches  through Montreux leading to the city of Lausanne.

Related to that ancient civilisation there are also some rests of a Roman Villa discovered some years ago confirming the presence of a more than relevant Imperial settlement in the area.

In the Middle Ages the current municipality was part of the Abbey of Saint-Maurice in the Valais and later the Bishop of Sion founded the parish of Montreux

.The town's name derives from the Latin word Monasterium which means monastery. In the year 1295 the area was before part of Girard and later incorporated to Oron.

In the early 14th century, exactly in the year 1317 there was a subdivision of the former settlement and all that happened when the local Lords of  Oron  Planches and Veytaux sold part of the southern territories to the Duke of Savoy.

The northern areas under Châtelard rule remained as a Savoy stronghold  first in the hands of the Lords of Oron but later went over as a result of marriage to the family Sarraz.

Due those changes and much more with the conquest of Vaud by Bern in the year 1536 the territories were under the administration of Chillon which was renamed in the year 1735 in Vevey bailiwick.

After the collapse of the old politic asset Montreux joined Châtelard,Les Planches and Veytaux from 1798 to 1803.

During the period of the Canton Geneva, then came up with the enactment of the Constitution of mediation in the canton of Vaud,in the year 1798.In the first year of those five when there was the change the communities mentioned were part of the district assigned to the city of  Vevey.

In the mid of the 18th Century Montreux gained a certain reputation by the several stays and provisional  residence of distinguished and charismatic figures such as as Jean-Jacques Rousseau,Lord Byron and Victor Hugo.

It was that presence of such famed characters the spark of the development of the resort which took place in three steps in a land in which there were only pastures and vineyards but already known as an enchanting place by trips of famed artists.

The  first residential buildings were built in the period between the years 1836 and 1859 but despite that there were not ideal communications to reach the resort.Positive improvements generating  excellent results began from 1850 to the 60s of that century with the development of former transport links.

The establishment of the railway in the year 1861 and notable further improvements of the roads and the navigation across the lake were the beginning of a brilliant and superb escalation.

Those facilities gave the visitors coming from abroad a great incentive with the opportunity to reach that destination in a short time and since there many tourists flocked on the shore of Lake Geneva in Montreux which started to be transformed in a prestigious summer holidays destination.

Another relevant step was when the surrounding hills were connected by a very accessible service consisting in the funicular railway a great main of transport permitting the tourism to reach at a high altitude the villages of Glion, Caux and Les Avants.

Those places  became famous to host sanatoriums, new accommodations and guesthouses for people suffering of tuberculosis and thanks all that the resort reached fame in all the country and abroad as a relevant Spa resort.

The Hotel des Alpes and the Grand Hotel both built in the year 1887 and also the Montreux Palace erected in 1905 are the iconic symbols in terms of hospitality and accommodations of Montreux. They can be considered the three great pioneers of the classy tourism niche of that resort, very comfortable structures with a great location and they became soon favourite places of rest and holidays for monarchs such as the Empress Elisabeth of Austria, aristocrats, and philosophers.

Other people mainly politicians, musicians and writers and an endless list of other prestigious characters flocked in Montreux fascinated by its picturesque landscapes and some of them who worth a mention are Richard Wagner, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and many others.

The resort started to be a site of relevant cultural events including the Daffodil Festival, which was for long time a selected appointment celebrated since 1897 until the year 1957.

The Grand Hôtel in Territet, the Palace Hotel in Caux, the Hotel Villa Karma and the Hotel Villa Chartran added to those three iconic accommodations mentioned before also became notorious and those famed structures were also immediately protagonists of the golden ages of that lakeside town which year by year found a relevant consolidation and much more it became a Top Class destination.

Many other popular characters mainly writers of the 20th century such as the German Rainer Maria Rilke, the Russian Vladimir Nabokov and Leonid Tolstoj and the Scottish Archibald Joseph Cronin who lived in the town for many years but also the American Ernst Hemingway contributed and continued the notable escalation in terms of popularity and Elite incoming flows towards that resort.

High levels of incoming tourism flows were recorded since the year 1910 although the Hotel industry experienced a slump during the 1st World War and later during the 2nd World War.

Those two tragic historic events generated less tourism, many Hotels had to close during those times and they were partially converted into apartment and houses.

Thanks to the prestige acquired in those years the Swiss town also became a very significant seat of many important international congresses and meetings at international level.

In the year 1934 took place the International Fascist Congress calling all the most important figures and exponents of the parties of the right in Europe. Two years later In the year 1936 Montreux hosted the Conference on the status of the Turkish Straits a convention which regulates the status which is still signed.

The centre of the town is mainly developed behind La Gran Rue the main coastal road and  Quay Eduard Jaccoud  which is the long lakeside promenade which continues south meeting Quai de la Rouvenaz and Quai de Ernest Ansermet which are sort of prolongations along the shore of the lake leading to the scenic Quai de Fleurs.

The Eglise de Saint-Vincent is the Church dedicated to St.Vincent and it is the most important local Religious building. It was mentioned for the first time in the 13th century, exactly in the year 1228 although it was probably erected in the 11th Century.

It is a Catholic Church which was declared national monument and it is a relevant structure after some restorations showing in its current architectonic lines a splendid Gothic revival style.Of refined aspect is its bell tower and the charming gable roof.
