China | Witnessed a Surge of Inbound Tourism Following UNESCO's Recognition of Spring Festival as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

 Following UNESCO's recognition of Spring Festival as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, China witnessed a surge off Inbound tourism, during the holiday period with a 22.9% increase of international visitors compared to the previous year.

On 4th December, 2024, UNESCO, inscribed Spring Festival, the social practice of celebrating the traditional Chinese New Year, on the Representative List of of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognizing its profound cultural significance and the traditions it embodies.

The UNESCO committee recognized the festival's wide array of rituals, unique cultural elements and the way it engages Chinese society, emphasizing the universal value of family, renewal, unity, harmony, social cohesion, and a sense of identity and continuity for Chinese people.

The inscription of Spring Festival, a time of celebration for China, marking the beginning of the Lunar New Year and involving a variety of social practices, including family reunions, home cleaning and food preparation underscores the global appreciation of the vibrant Chinese culture and the importance of preserving its rich traditions with China's intention to safeguard the festival's cultural identity as a treasure for future generations.

During the Spring Festival Holidays the first after the festival was added to UNESCO' list of of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the inbound tourism market saw a significant growth, also driven by the expansion of visa – free entry policies.

Border inspection authorities across the country recorded more than 14.36 million cross - border trips during the eight - day Spring Festival holiday representing a 6.3% increase from a year earlier according to statistics released by the National Immigration Administration and a total of 958.000 trips were made by international travellers, up 22.9% year - on - year.

Data from travel platforms also reflected this trend, inbound tourist bookings in Trip.com grew by 203% year - on - year during the holiday, while domestic flight bookings managed by Qunar, famous Chinese online travel agency headquartered in Beijing with passengers hold non - Chinese passports increased by 70%.

Concerning destinations, Xi'an, a large city and capital of Shaanxi Province in Central China, a centre boasts a rich cultural and historical heritage, once known as Chang'an, "Eternal Peace" famed to mark the Silk Road's eastern end, became a very popular destination for international visitors.

The city handled 47.000 inbound and outbound trips during the holiday, with an 84% daily increase in tourists traffic, according to data provided by the provincial border inspection station.

In Henan Province in Central China's Yellow River Valley, a land widely recognized as the place where Chinese civilization originated, cties like Luoyang, Kaifeng and Zhengzhou attracted numerous  international travellers who reached this captivating territory to live and enjoy vibrant cultural activities, such as temple fairs, traditional folk performances and lantern shows among others.

According to data recorded and provided by Trip.com, inbound tourism enquiries for Zhengzhou increased by 132% year - on - year, with the main sources of markets led in the order by Hong Kong, Taiwan, the United States, Singapore and Thailand while Luoyang and Kaifeng recorded a 100% and 92% increase in inbound tourism respectively.

In the last years an increasing number of international visitors are choosing to experience the festive atmosphere in the homes of Chinese people to enter in deep contact with the local culture and during the holidays.

 Linked to that Tujia, one of  the world's leading short - term lodging rental platform launched in 2011, saw a 3.7 - fold increase in bookings from non - Chinese passport holders, and 51 cities received requests from international travellers for the first time.
