The Azores, Portugal | Outpacing National Tourism Growth Rate According to a Regional Statistics Service Report

The Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal consisting in an archipelago in the mid - Atlantic composed of nine stunning volcanic islands in the Macaronesia region outpaces national tourism growth according to a report by SREA, the Regional Statistics Service.

The Portuguese region is experiencing a surge in tourism, significantly outpacing the national growth rate. The Azores in May 2025 saw a 3.1% increase with 444.800 overnight stays in tourist accommodation compared to the previous year, exceeding the national average of 1.3%.

During the five months of the year, the Azores registered 1.4 million overnight stays in tourist establishments, an increase of 7.3% compared to the same period last year. 

In May, the region recorded 136.500 guests, up 5.2%, with an average stay of 3.26 nights, which increased by 2.2% year - on - year.

The data provided show that residents abroad accounted for more than half of the overnight stays in May representing the 70.6%, totalling 313.900, 5.2% more than in the same period last year and with 130.900 overnight stays, the 29.4%, the domestic market recorded a drop of 5.8%.

Among the international markets the United States of America was the largest source market in May, with 52.400 overnight stays, a 16.7% of overnight stays by residents abroad, a number that represents an annual increase of 11.9%.

In second place is Germany, with 51.100 overnight stays, representing 16.3%, 1.1% more, and in third place is Spain with 29.800 overnight stay, 9.5% and with an increase of 1.2%.

The markets with the highest year - on - year growth are Israel, 42.4%, Poland, 40% and Canada, 31.7%, while Belgium, - 20.8%, Brazil, - 14.7% and the Netherlands, - 10.8% showed the biggest drops.

With 235.900 overnight stays, the hotel industry of the Azores accounted for the total in May, followed by rentals with 188.200 overnight stays equivalent to the 42.3% and rural tourism with 20.700 overnight stays representing the 4.7%.

Rural tourism recorded the highest annual growth, 15.2%, followed by hotels, 3% and local accommodation, 2.1%.

Considering only hotels and local accommodation, which accounted for 95% of overnight stays, only two islands recorded an annual reduction in the number of overnight stays in May : Santa Maria, - 7.7% and Corvo, - 0.7%.

Graciosa was the island that experienced the greatest increase in the number of overnight stays in May, 21.8%, followed by São Jorge, 10.8%, Flores, 5%, São Miguel, 3% and Terceira, 1.6% while Pico and Faial saw a slight fluctuation of 0.1%.

São Miguel island, the largest in the Azorean archipelago, accounted for 70.9% of overnight stays in hotels and local accommodation, 300.600 in May, followed by Tercerira with 49.500 overnight stays, 11.7%, Faial with 25.900 overnight stays, 6.1% and Pico, with 23.900 overnight stays, 5.6%.

The Azores tourism outlook is positive, with a trend of sustainable growth and increasing international recognition as a unique ecotourism destination.

The region is experiencing a notable surge in tourist activity, with record - breaking overnight stays and revenue, and is actively working to balance tourism with the preservation of its natural and cultural heritage.
