Macau, autonomous region on the south coast of China across the Pearl River Delta from Hong Kong received more than 3 million visitors in July of the current year, which means an increase of 9.5% compared to the same period in 2023 and an increment of 85.6% compared to the figures recorded before the pandemic.
Another very significant figure regard the local hotels that welcomed more than 7.2 million guests in the first half of 2024.
Other interesting data reported by the DSEC, the Directorate of Statistics and Census Services, notes that about 1.6 million visitors arrived on organized tours and spent less than a day in Macau.
Since the beginning of the year, the Chinese government has announced a series of measures to support Macau, such as increasing the tax exemption limit for personal goods purchased by visitors from China, who can travel several times during their excursions over a seven-day period between the Special Administrative Region and Hengqin, a town adjacent to Macau, through the border post of the same name.
The Chinese authorities have also expanded the list of destinations with so-called "individual visas" in order to visit Macau, Hong Kong and 10 other cities in China.
Official data shows that 91.8% of tourists entering Macau came from Hong Kong or Mainland China while the territory received fewer than 173,000 international visitors, 75.5% of those registered in 2019.
The Director of Tourism Services of Macau had already confirmed the nomination of the region as East Asian City of Culture 2025 which will be used as a tool to promote Macau to a wider audience.
