San Vincenzo - Tuscany | Glimmering Etruscan Coast Destination

San Vincenzo is a very attractive municipality located in the Tyrrhenian stretch of coast south of Livorno which takes the name of Costa degli Etruschi, the Etruscan Coast and which extends from the major centre of this territory Piombino.

Located in the Livorno Maremma or the historic Pisan Maremma San Vincenzo is bordered north of Castagneto Carducci and to the south by the Rimigliano Coastal Park and Piombino with in its inland the suggestive Val di Cornia.

This glimmering seaside resort is highlighted by its beautiful long sandy beach boasting a constant Blue Flag and alongside the municipal coastal stretch you can admire small charming coves and a splendid tiny Tyrrhenian bay.

If you are an art and history lover you can stop there, because also that centre  has a long history to narrate with considerable monuments attesting a notable patrimony.

That place was for a long time a Pisa domain and in a stop you can admire two defencive towers built by that iconic Marine Republic, the Torre di San Vincenzo, a tower erected by the pisans in the 13th century in proximity of the harbour as a bastion overlooking the Mediterranean.

Around the middle of the 16th century the Medici carried out some intervention to strengthen the defensive capabilities effectlively implementing the role played the tower developed on a square plan, arranged on three levels with a sloping base.

The external walls were covered in plaster following restorations carried out the last century and the top part of the tower culminates with a battlement delimiting the terrace which replaced the four – arched roof covering that was present at least until the end of the 18th century.

Continuation with the Torre Vecchia, the Old tower located in the southern boundaries of the municipality in a borough called Torraccia built by the Pisans between the 12th and 13th centuries redeveloped in the 16th century to enhance the new coastal system of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

Developed on a quadrangular plan on three levels with a sloping base that extends along three of the four sides, the external wall structures cocered in stone have some of the original loopholes that open at different heights, some quadrangular windows allow the corresponding internal levels to be identified from the outside.

In the upper part there is a solution of continuity on each side which originally allowed the battery of cannons with which the tower was equipped.

Afterwards you can visit the Parish Church of San Vincenzo build in the mid – neneteenh century and conscrated in 1865.

The building, adjacent to large residential complexes developed between the end of the 20th century has a very simple façade with a a portal surmounted by a circular rose windows.

Inside you can appreciate a cycle of frescoes by Giampaolo Talani executed between 1979 and 1987 depicting eight episodes from the life of Jesus Christ and the four Evangelists.

Continuation with the Torre Nuova, the new tower erected by the Medici family in the hamlet of Stellino in the northern part of the municipality pretty close to the slopes of the promontory of Poggio San Leonardo and right on the border with the territory of Piombino.

The construction began in 1670 and was completed in 1723 although it was called new tower the appearance is more similar to a coastal fortification developed on a rectangular plan divided in three levels with a tower – shaped building havinf a square section with very thick wall structures culminated in upper part with a loggia in which the armaments were arranged then replaced by a battlement during the renovation works carried out in the 19th century.

If you love trekking that municipality is a mecca for this activity because  it is the seat of the Parco Naturale costiero di Rimigliano, a protected nature reserve which extends in its boundaries  approximately 6,0 kilometres along a marvellous coast.

That beautiful park was established in 1973 and the visit is a great experience for a stunning scenery consisting in stupendous high cliffs and spectacular views overlooking crystalline and emerald waters but at a short distance from them you can reach sandy dunes and forests returning in a very short time from those great attractions to a marvellous coastal stretch by a very scenic path.

Visiting San Vincenzo is a great destination, a ravishing coast, a superb sandy beach, history and art, a splendid combination all to enjoy.
