Amalfi | 11 Proposals with the Aim of Countering Overtourism

Amalfi, splendid town and comune in the province of Salerno in the region of Campania on a ravishing coast facing a spectacular gulf surrounded by dramatic cliffs at the mouth of a deep ravine at the foot of the Monte Cerreto through the municipal administration led by Daniele Milano has presented 11 proposals with the aim of promoting a more sustainable tourism and a more adequate coexistence between residents and visitors.

La Repubblica,  a well-known Italian daily general – interest newspaper, reported that these proposals were illustrated and presented during a meeting held at the Chamber of Commerce of Salerno with the presence of the General Councilor for Tourism Felice Casucci.

A first point addressed that concerns how possible action is thedevelopment of a system for monitoring pedestrian flows and the construction of a terminal for embarkation and disembarkation.

The General Councillor stated that the optimal solutions are to direct passengers towards the ferries of the gates through a technological system that is able  to indicate timetables, delays, destinations and to all this is added the work carried out for the territorial ZTL, for the liberation of the seafront from bus parking.

These actions are combined with the contigentation in some specific time slots where there are excessive peaks in the loading and unloading of NCCs and tourist buses.

A further action of great importance concerns the etiquette of tourism,  a concept rooted in discipline and respect and precisely to avoid anti-tourist sentiments citizens will be asked through a questionnaire what are those behaviors that they least like on the part of visitors and guests and consequently try to highlight to those who arrive what are the behaviors to avoid.

This action will not take place with bans but will be developed through a social campaign with the intention of directing people and making them understand that more tourists and visitors are real guests of Amalfi with a community made up of people who live and work in this town.

Another salient point that was touched on is a warning to the non-hotel sector, with a progressive growth that has now reached 4.512 units has been accompanied by a substantial reduction in the number of residents which in 2002 were 5.530 and today, in 2024 there are 4.653.

The proposal, in technical terms is to intervene on the regional law governing non-hotel accommodation facilities and at the same time to extend the power of manoeuvre in the field of short-term rentals, currently allowed in Italy only to the Municipality of Venice, also to other centres that experience marked inconveniences attributable to the well-known phenomenon of overtourism.

Municipalities would attribute this power of intervention only when they exceed a threshold determined on the basis of the ratio between tourist beds and residents, for example when the former reach at least 50% of the number of inhabitants.
