The Cayman Islands | Motion for a Referendum on the Docking Infrastructure for Cruise Ships

The Cayman Islands, a British Overseas Territory, encompasses three islands in the western Caribbean Sea part of the Greater Antilles, well known for its pristine beaches, varied scuba diving and snorkeling sites, stylish, comfortable beach resorts, a stunning, diverse wildlife and the highest standard of living in the Caribbean area through its Government has tabled a motion for a public referendum to determine whether the Caribbean country will establish a docking infrastructure for the Caribbean cruise ships.

With the support of the Cayman Islands Minister of Tourism Kenneth Bryan, this referendum would pose a single question to the inhabitants of the Caribbean archipelago : " Should the Cayman Islands develop docking infrastructure for cruise ships ? "

The success or failure of the referendum could determine the development of cruises in the Caribbean in the coming years and the motion is expected to be discussed when parliament meets in October.

Although no concrete date for the proposed referendum has been announced, the Minister of Tourism has anticipated that it could take place in late October or mid-November.

The consultation period could be suspended if the Prime Minister of the Cayman Islands Juliana O'Connor-Connolly decides whether the matter is urgent and the legislation would then go to Parliament for debate on the issue and then to a vote.

The latest initiative follows the collapse of a $ 250 million port project proposed by the Cayman Islands Government in 2019 in partnership with several cruise lines.

This project was later abandoned by government bodies after citizens opposed it citing environmental and other concerns and they formed the CRP Cayman the Cruise Port Referendum Cayman group, which has collected firm its petition to force a referendum.

The current referendum seeks as The Minister of Tourism said a sort of "directive" from the citizens of the Cayman Islands, unlike the previous referendum, there is currently no proposed plan to build a cruise ship dock.
