Thailand, Southeast Asian country on the Indochinese Peninsula, a major tourist destination characterized by its rich historical and cultural heritage, dramatic landscapes, pristine beaches, ancient ruins, imposing, ornate temples displaying figures of the venerated Buddha and opulent royal palaces through the new Minister of Tourism Sorawong Thienthong has reinstated the abandonment of the tourist tax of 300 baht equivalent to about € 8.0 in an attempt to increase the revenue of the tourist sector.
With this operation, the new Minister believes that the collection of the tourist tax benefits the tourism industry as the revenues generated can be used for the development of infrastructure and to ensure the safety of tourists.
The proposed tourism tax, which was approved by the cabinet in 2022, requires arrivals by air from abroad to pay 300 bath, while those entering by sea and land will pay half that amount at 150 bath, however the project is not yet approved for publication in the Official Gazette.
The Minister of Tourism will remain committed to achieving the long-term target of 3.0 billion baht from foreign markets alone during the four-year term.
In addition the Minister also supports the idea of hosting a sporting event, as the arrival of Formula 1 in Thailand suggesting a street circuit on Ratchadamnoen Road, historic artery in the Phra Nakhon and Prom Prap Sattru with Dusit Districts of Bangkok, important passage crossing of the old capital of Thailand commisioned by King Rama V, a proposal to reflect in its kind the unique character of the country.
As an additional note, Thailand will introduce a mandatory ETA system starting from December 2024, the Electronic Travel Authorization for visa-exempt citizens, which will undoubtedly have a very significant impact on the travel process of millions of visitors.
