Macau | New Incoming Monthly Record in August with 3.65 Million Visitors

Macau, autonomous region on the south coast of China, former Portuguese territory until 1999 across the Pearl River Delta from Hong Kong, a land which reflects a great mix of cultural influences highlighted by the islands of Coloane and Taipa and nicknamed "The Las Vegas of Asia" for its giant casinos and malls registered a new incoming monthly record receiving 3.65 million visitors in August.

This significant figure in terms of incoming was recorded and announced by DSEC, the Statistics and Census Office of the semi-autonomous Chinese region, official data showing that the number of tourists increased by 0.8% compared to the previous record of 3.62 million set in August 2019, in the pre-pandemic period.

As further confirmation of this successful growth came by DST, the Macau Tourist Services that on 1st September highlighted that the territory received more visitors in August 2024 than in the same month of 2019 for the first time since the end of the covid-19 pandemic.

This significant figure also notifies that the number of registered tourists also represents an increase of 13.3% compared to the same month in 2023 after the Chinese government lifted all restrictions due to the covid-19 pandemic on travel to Hong Kong and Macau.

According to another statistic notified by the DSEC, about 56% of the visitors, quantified in over 2 million, arrived in Macau with organized tours and spent less than a day in the Chinese autonomous region.

The country's central government earlier this year announced a series of measures to support Macau, including an increase in the tax exemption limit for personal consumer goods purchased by visitors from China, who can travel multiple times between the special administrative region and Henqqin, Island that lies mostly in Zhuhai, a prefecture - level city and special economic zone in Guangdon adjacent to Macau during their excursions over a seven-day period through the border post of Hengqin itself.

The Chinese authorities have also expanded the list of places with individual visas intended to visit Macau, Hong Kong and ten other Chinese cities.

Official data reported also shows that 93.5% of tourists entering Macau were from Hong Kong or mainland China with around 162,000 international visitors, 75.3% of those registered in 2019.

DST, the Macau Tourist Services Directorate, on August 26th  launched until October 17th a lottery of 100 travel packages including air tickets and hotel accommodation for international tourists participating in an online survey.

At the time of the launch of this initiative, IST Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes said she expected Macau to be able to welcome more than three million of international visitors by 2025.

Overall, in the first eight months of 2024, Macau received almost 23.4 million visitors, a figure that represents 32.7% more than in the same period last year and about 85.3% more than in 2019.
