The iconic Trevi Fountain, emblematic 18th century fountain in the heart of Rome, baroque masterpiece designed by the architect Nicola Salvi built on the façade of Palazzo Poliand completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1762, well known for the images of multitudes of people at its edges to admire its monumental beauty and throw a coin with the desire to return to see the eternal city is the protagonist of a hypothesis of a visit with a limited number of visitors to fight that phenomenon very famous nowadays called Overtourism and to safeguard the future of the fountain itself.
The Administration of Rome is currently evaluating and reasoning on the proposal formulated by the Councillor for Major Events, Sport, Tourism and Fashion of the Italian capital Alessandro Onorato with the support of the Mayor Roberto Gualtieri who confirmed that the time has come and an optimal decision is necessary to effectively counter a situation that risks becoming unmanageable as it progresses.
A proposed solution capable of managing the flows could be to introduce a symbolic "Entrance Tax" at the price of € 1-2.
Il Messaggero , well known daily newspaper based in Rome, reported news concerning a base on which it would be working that would provide for an online reservation with admission every thirty minutes and free admission for the citizens of Rome.
The Minister of Tourism Daniela Santanchè expressed herself on this issue and declared that she is in favour of the development of a booking and payment mechanism without creating a limited number establihing adequate controls.
