Honduras, Central American country overlooking the Gulf with the same name with a coastal stretch of over 640 kilometres along the Caribbean Sea and facing the Pacific Ocean in correspondance of Gulf of Fonseca, highlighted by pristine beaches with crystalline waters presenting a territory made up of mountains, boasting a rich biodiversity with a large rainforest near the border with Guatemala, affirmed its commitment to the promotion of Mayan tourism.
This announcement was declared during the 80th MMO Regional Meeting, linked to the Mundo Maya Organization held in the famous town of San Pedro in Belize in the island of Ambergris Caye, famed centre for its beauty andis thought to be the main inspiration behind the song "La Isla Bonita" by American singer Madonna from her album True Blue recorded in 1986.
This important meeting was attended by representatives of the five member countries of the MMO such as Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.
This commitment is linked to the ancestral origins of the country, a pleasant return to the roots, historically Honduras was the homeland of ancient, important Mesoamerican culture among them the Maya who however had almost completely abandoned the Honduran territory by the 10th century to move further north to present - day when they reached Guatemala and the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.
Honduras has now affirmed the commitment to promote cultural tourism also linked to the civilization of the ancestors and sustainable tourism of the region in line with the objectives of the organization.
Belize assumed the Pro Tempore Presidency of the organization and representing Honduras was present the Deputy Minister of Tourism Reizel Vilorio who introduced initiatives to strengthen the tourism sector within the framework of the organization's regional plan.
A key theme addressed during the meeting was the review of the progress made by the MMO in recent years and in particular in the area of promoting Mayan tourism.
The event presented the new plan of the MMO which aims to serve as a guide for tourism actions in the coming years in the entire region and also a further one that aims to promote more integrated tourism, focused on strengthening connectivity between the member countries of the organization.
This strategic plan of the MMO focuses on consolidating a multi-destination offering that brings advantages and benefits to all members countries, highlighting the Mayan heritage while promoting cultural tourism, conservation and sustainability.
The Honduran Deputy Minister of Tourism underlined the importance of the country in this framework of regional collaboration by declaring the will and commitment to continue to strengthen sustainable tourism as the economic engine of the country.
The MMO committee continues to work in partnership with the private sector to develop initiatives that drive economic growth and promote the region as an attractive and culturally rich, tourist destination.
