Japan | Record of International Visitors and Ambitious Targets for the Future

Japan, an island country in East Asia located in the Pacific Ocean off the northeast coast of the Asian mainland, a developed nation with one of the world's largest economies by nominal GDP, global leader in the automotive, electronic industries and robotics with significant contributions to science and technology, well known around the world for its culture including art, cuisine, film and music experienced a record of internatioinal visitors in 2024 and it is approaching ambitious targets for the future.

Last year Japan received some 36.87 million visitors, data represent an increase of 47.1% compared to 2023 and surpassing the pre - pandemic record of 31.88 million in 2019, a growth which was driven by increased arrivals of 8.81 million tourists from South Korea and 6.98 million tourists coming from China along with a notable increase from Western Countries who tend to stay longer.

Visitor spending in Japan also reached new heights, surpassing ¥8 trillion, approximately $51.2 billion for the first time and linked to these relevant performances the Japanese Government has set ambitious targets to attract 60 million visitors and ¥15 trillion about $96.0 billion spending by 2030.

To achieve this important goal, several initiatives have been launched to improve visitor experiences and promote regional tourism.

As for the tourism sector's contribution to Japan's economy, it now rivals major exports, such as steel and semiconductor manufacturing equipment, benefiting sectors such as accommodation, hospitality, gastronomy and retail.

Despite record growth, challenges remain to be solved such as the phenomen of overtourism in popular areas has raised concerns about overcrowding, its impact on local communities, and travellers satisfaction.

Regional destinations with unique natural and cultural offerings are seen as key to addressing these issues, but they require improved infrastructure to handle the growing demand, an aspect that Japan is facing with accurate plans and meticulous strategies.
