Portugal, attractive southern European country on the Iberian Peninsula, a very demanded destination highlighted by a rich, historic and cultural heritage with vibrant cities, picturesque villages, stunning beaches, a land which offers a delicious cuisine and a multitude of outdoor activities launches "Roads with History" a new tourist product to promote the central country regions along the EN16, the National Road No. 16 which connects Aveiro,in the district of the same namel to Vila Formoso, in the district of Guarda and the EN17, the National Road No. 17 connecting Coimbra to Celorico da Beira also in the district of Guarda.
This initiative promoted by Turismo Centro de Portugal, is one of the five projects financed by Tourism of Portugal, within the scope of the +Interior Tourism Line, a new tourist proposal which aims to transform two of the most emblematic roads in the interior of the country into relevant axes of cultural, historical, heritage and gastronomic discovery.
A collaborative network is being created that brings together tour operators, municipalities and local agents, in an integrated strategy for enhancing the value of these territories, also discovering sites less popular but rich of history and natural beauty with the objective to structure an innovative offer, based on the landscape, cultural heritage and gastronomic richness of the 24 municipalities covered.
With an investment of close one million euros the project led by Turismo Centro de Portugal and also promoted by the Intermunicipal Communities of Aveiro Region and Coimbra Region, Beiras, Serra da Estrela Region, Viseu Dão Lafões,territories crossed by the two national roads.
The project partners are AHRESP, the Regional Agency for Tourism Promotion of Central Portugal, Infrasestructuras de Portugal, Clube Escape Livre and the Foge Cmigo guides, thus reinforcing the commitment to offer unique and memorable experiences in the central country regions.
The national Road, EN16, 224 kilometres long, links, Aveiro, attractive city on the west coast of Portugal, known as the "Venice of Portugal" set along a lagoon called Ria de Aveiro, highlighted by its canals navigated by colourful boats and boasting outstanding Art Nouveau buildings with Vila Formoso in the municipality of Almeida, one of the most important crossings on the Portugal – Spain border boasting artistic masterpieces such as the medieval church Iglesia matrix de São João Bautista and splendid votive chapels, passing through the districts of Aveiro, Viseu and Guarda.
The National Road, EN17, also known as Estrada da Beira, runs 129 kilometres between Coimbra, a charming city beautifully embraced by the Mondego River, former capital of the Portuguese Kingdom, boasting an outstanding and well preserved medieval old core and home of an iconic University and Celorica da Beira, known for its medieval castle built in the 12th century and covered by the green area of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park,connecting the districts of Coimbra and Guarda.
The action plan for this new tourism product foresees the implemention of several strategic measures, including the creation of tourist routes, the development of signage inftastructures, the training of local agents and a comprehensive promotion campaign.
