Guatemala | A Central American Destination to Discover Through its Design and Crafsmanship

 

Guatemala, country situated south of Mexico, hidrologically bordered to the south by the Pacific Ocean and to the northeast by the Gulf of Honduras, the most populous nation in the region with a rich culture, history and natural beauty, home to varied landscapes composed by volcanoes, rainforests, tropical coastlines, boasting splendid colonial centres and iconic Mayan ruins and also a Central American destination to discover through its design and craftmanship, and to showcase all that in the international landscape it participates in the eight edition of Madrid Design Festival as a guest project.

The country with an exhibition area that include a textile installation inspired by the iconic Temple of the Great Jaguar in the Mayan city of Tikal, iconic citadel in the rainforests of northern Guatemala and workshops on textile, embroidery, contemporary ceramics and traditional clay is showing the world its talent and skills in design and craftmanship.

INGUAT, the Guatemalam Institute of Tourism government institution which aims at promoting the domestic and incoming tourism committed to the promotion of culture and talent of the country has played an important role in this participation, which seeks to position Guatemala as an indispensable tourist destination and as a benchmark in these activities worldwide, protagonist of the Fiesta Design program,  which takes place at the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, located at the Francisco Giner de los Rios Foundation in Madrid and can be visited from 12th to 23th February 2025.

The Central American nation as the birthplace and core of Mayan civilization that existed from antiquity to the early modern period, known by its ancient temples and glyphs and divided into three principal periods such as the Preclassic, Classic and Postclassic offers world – famous tourist destinations, such as Antigua Guatemala, beautiful small city surrounded by volcanoes boasting unique colonial and baroque masterpieces,  the stunning Lake Atitlan, an impressive body of water in a massive volcanic crater in Guatemala's southwestern highlands ans the millenary Tikal National Park which comprises 57.600 hectares of tropical broadleaf, palm forests,wetlands and savannah with thousands of architectural and artistic remain of the Maya Civilization that increasingly attract visitors with a sensitivity to visual and material culture.

Pieces and projects of contemporary design and local crafts, forms of expression that connect the iconic past began around 2000 BC excelling in architecture, agriculture, written languages, scripts and mathematic with the present and future of the country, is an essential part of the project that Guatemala is presenting.

Through an itinerant installation, inspired by the Temple of the Great Jaguar of Tikal, built to house the remains of King Hasaw Chan K' awil in 721 and developed by the kings's successor yet probably designed by King K'awil himself, located in the department of Péten, one of the main cities of the ancient Mayan civilization,  and declared a World Cultural and Natural Heritage of Humanity in 1979 by UNESCO, attendees will be able to appreciate the essence of Guatemalan textile design and discover new perspectives in this discipline.

The installation consists in a modular and sustainable structure, made of wood and braided steel cables, designed by Idonika, marketing agency specializing in strategy, identity, content, experiences, sponsorships and tourism headquartered in Madrid with the architecture of Amarillo Studio, Architecture, Urban Planning and design firm based in Majadahonda, Madrid incorporating Guatemalan textiles from Casa Edel, a heartwarming homeware brand handcrafted produced in the Central American country, inspired by cherished memories of the founder's beloved grandmother, Edelmira based in Guatemala City.

Inside a sound installation designed by the Barcelona studio Near Sound, will transport visitors to the sounds of the jungle and the suggestive landscapes of Guatemala.

As a guest project of Madrid Design Fest, the Central American country has an area where different pieces developed by prominent Guatemalan designers, artisans and master craftsmen who have specialised in the intersection of handmade with contemporary vision of design and creation who showcase all their pure talent and unique skills.

The designers who represent innovation and the identity of the country and who participate in the event exhibiting some of their creations are Casa Edel, Cinco x Cinco, Chivas y Chivas, Diego Olivero Studio, Estudio Caliente, Estudio Fábrica, Índigo, Itza Wood, Mayú Handmade, Meüs Studio, Mira Mira, Nada Duele, Nébula and RÖJ, as well as the master artisans Sofia Contreras, Ana Ronalda Vásquez, Rosa Elvira López Ramirez and Vidal Garcia.

During the event of Fiesta Design at Madrid Design Fest, Guatemala offers a series of free workshops on textile embroidery, contemporary ceramics and traditional clay, aimed at both children and adults, to bring Guatemalan crafts and design closer to festival visitors.

Sofía Contreras, from Meüs Studio, will offer the embroidered textile workshop; the master artisans of the municipality of Chinautla, Ana Ronalda Vásquez and Rosa Elvira López Ramírez, the traditional clay workshop; and the contemporary ceramics workshop will be taught by the designer Emma Gutiérrez together with the master craftsman Vidal García, both from Mayú, innovative and artistic company that specializes in the design, production, and commercialization of unique handmake products, a firm boasting a high reputation based in Guatemala City.
