Santo Domingo, vibrant capital and largest city of the Dominican Republic, one of the Caribbean's oldest cities, commercial, cultural, financial, industrial and political heart of the country, located in the centre of the southern coast of the country in the Hispaniola Island, overlooking the Caribbean Sea and at the mouth of the Ozama River will experience a solid investment of More than €6.0 Million in works to improve the Image of the iconic "Ciudad Colonial", the Colonial City, emblematic walled, cobblestone historic core, boasting buildings that date to the 1500s, including the cathedral, which was the first erected in the New World an urban area that was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its great history and numerous artisitc treasures.
This area of the city, developed between 1510 and 1514 is definitely a must –-see, considering the city's best historic site, boasting a high number of landmarks, including authentic artistic jewels such as the Catedral Primada de América also known as Basilica Menor de Santa Maria de la Encarnación , Fortaleza Ozama, Alcázar de Colón and Museos de las Casas Reales among others.
Ciudad Colonial is an authentic open air museum showcasing superb masterpieces developed in Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Colonial styles, picturesque streets, suggestive alleys and stoned walls and it was reported that 8% of tourists arriving in the Dominican Republic visit the Colonial City which has caused great dynamism throughout the area.
This historic central neighbourhood of the capital of the Dominican Republic covering an area of 93 ha is located on the west bank of the Ozama River, it extends from the north of George Washington Avenue to the east of Palo Hinchado Street and its main streets are the iconic Calle Las Mercedes, Calle el Conde and Calle las damas.
“Ciudad Colonial “ also known as “Zona Colonial”, Colonial Zone, or more colloquially as “La Zona", The Zone is the oldest continuously inhabited European - establishment settlement in the Americas, and on 8th December 1990 it was declared by UNESCO, the Organization of the United Nations for Education and Culture as a Human Heritage Site under the name of “Ciudad Colonial de Santo Domingo”, the colonial city of Santo Domingo.
This intervention to improve the image of the iconic Ciudad Colonial is a project exceeds 7.1 square kilometres including sidewalks,containments, lighting, landscaping, storm drains, street paving, paving of one of the most charming part of the Dominican capital.
The Minister of Tourism of the Dominican Republic David Collado reported that the work will include the reconstruction of the Eugenio María de Hostos and Callejón Regina streets two relevant urban arteries within the Zona Colonial., whose intervention will cost more than 61 million pesos, more than €6.0 Million.
The project, is led by CEIZTUR the Executing, Committee of Infrastructures of Tourist Areas, of the Ministry of Tourism is part of the street rehabilitation plan that presents progress in its execution and is carried out with the funds from the Ministry of Tourism and the Inter - American development Bank for an amount of $90.0 million.
The interventions are developed in sections to affect mobility and commerce as little as possible and make the roads more passable among pedestrians.
The Minister of Tourism said that the most labours in this great rehabilitation program of the historic Ciudad Colonial reversed more than 400 million pesos in emblematic works.
