Punta del Este is situated on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean close to the river Rio de la Plata just one hour driving from the Capital Montevideo,(I wrote a post about that splendid city) boasting  over 30,0 kilometres of wonderful beaches,an extremely lively nightlife, excellent and comfortable Hotels ready to satisfy the most demanding requests.Other relevant aspects is the presence of a a wide network of facilities and services and in addition something which furthermore is to take in more than notable consideration is that it is a very safe place with a very high quality of life.
The History of the resort officially started the early 16th Century,a discovery by the famous Spanish Navigator Juan Diaz de Solis who also discovered during his explorations along the American Continent the famous river Rio de la Plata.

The former name of the current resort was originally Cabo de Santa Maria,(St.Mary Cape) and soon one certified its strategic position which could benefit different kind of operations in proximity of a relevant waterway with immediate access to the Atlantic Ocean it became an iconic stronghold of the Spanish Kingdom which hosted along its shore its fleet.

During the occupation of that coastal land the cape was fortified and furthermore the Spaniards established there an arsenal ended in the year 1766.During that time that headland was mainly developed as a sort of defencive base due to its unique location with a superb and ample control of the bay next to Montevideo and also towards the city of Buenos Aires with a sort of total open window facing the Atlantic.

That place was later renamed in the year 1829  Villa Ituzaingó to celebrate the victory against the Brazilian Army just two years before.Punta del Este in the late 19th century despite the relevant military operations managed in previous times did not have an intense Iberian colonisation in terms of settlement of population and it was a humble fishing village which increased year by year with the development of approximately
50 stores adapted to contain the fishermen catch.

The limited tourism resources to receive visitors were due to the lack of infrastructures and projects and the first significant flows take long until the year 1899 when Pedro Risso a businessman linked to fisheries operations decided to establish replacing one of his structures consisting in a fishing warehouse industry
with the first Hotel of the history of that magnificent resort.

Thanks to that pioneer hospitality establishment, its gorgeous beaches and the beauty of its natural environment were the winning key to open a relevant door in the former management of an incoming and services related to hotel business.

The former village in that period was mainly inhabited by descendants of the first Spanish colonists coming from other geographic areas of the country and some years later populated by other European immigrants mainly coming from Argentina.

Year by year Punta del Este started to have an aspect of small town with the first development of scattered agglomerations which gradually increased in size and changed its previous image. Thanks to a constant and strong demand to spend some days of holidays for its unique and marvellous beaches,an uncontaminated atmosphere a more than peaceful environment with a very mild climate, apart that mentioned Hotel were established some provisional accommodations in local houses and mansions erected along the coast and those structures became the first network closely related to the incoming hospitality in that period.

The increasing prestige in terms of overnights all year and VIPs stays were the definitive consolidation of Punta del Este as one of the most appreciated Elite havens continued with incredible success until the 50s.

In that concrete period another relevant event which launched that seaside town to a further prestigious level of fame is related to an important Argentinian Magnate called Mauricio Litman who inaugurated in the year 1951 the First Cinema Festival of Punta del Este.

Certainly also that manifestation linked to the Cinema Industry with a notable participation of numerous Filmmakers,Directors,Actors and Actresses of extreme popularity was another more than considerable step which launched the current resort in the magic spheres of the golden list of the International Top class resorts.

The magic history of that resort of Uruguay automatically continued on that successful wave with the land of many eminent figures linked to the Politic,Sport,Art,Music,Entertainment and Fashion who flocked on the shore of that Atlantic town filling days and nights of cultural and business meetings, glamorous parties, shows and calling always and more new notorious characters who landed there.

The official residents are currently, approximately 21,000,including the extra radius agglomerations but in  high season with the intense tourism incoming flows and thanks to the great capacity in terms of hospitality accommodations it reached in some occasions the relevant number of about 270,000 people.
