Virginia Water | Fascinating Park in a Classy Surrey Village.



Virginia Water is certainly a great attraction of Southern England thanks to the scenic presence of its notorious fascinating park highlighting in all its splendour a classy Surrey village situated not far from London downtown bordering the Old Royal County of Windsor.
 
That fascinating centre pretty close to the municipalities of Old Windsor and Sunninghill and Ascot both in Berkshire is part of the Borough of Runnymede, a local government district formed in the 70's under the Local Governement Act 1972, a statute of the British Parliament which reformed the local administrations of England and Wales since 1st April 1974.

That Borough is historically very famous all around Great Britain for an iconic event linked to the famed Magna Carta, that notorious charter with main protagonist the emblematic King John, an important document which represented in its kind the first chapter for the development of the English Constitution.

Apart that it was a place well known including much before as a favourite destination of the highest sphere of the oldest British Monarchy since the times of the first Anglo-Saxon dynasties with protagonist a  figure as Alfred the Great, Monarch of Wessex in the 9th century who often visited its boundaries.


Virginia Water takes its name from the lake situated in the nearby Windsor Great Park, a huge green lung with a surface area of 20,2 kilometres  closely related to Queen Elizabeth I who was well known in the 16th century as the Virgin Queen in the 16th century also nicknamed Good Queen Bess and Floriana, daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.

That vast verdant environment bordering in large part the territory of the County of Surrey and in minor that of Berkshire is very famous to be home of Wentworth Estate founded in 1920 consisting in a group of houses and woodland across 7,0 square kilometres hosting in its boundaries the iconic Wentworth Club, where the first Ryder Cup was celebrated.

Since a long time ago Virginia Water is considered one of the most expensive places to live in the United Kingdom, located at short distance from Ascot, a famous site extremely notorious elevated since a long time ago as a horse racing Temple, a site of immense prestige which reached for that a considerable popularity worldwide.  (I wrote a post about that centre if you are interested)

It is not a case that many VIPs, prominent characters of art, culture, politic, sport and entertainment chose that centre to live or because they lived and it is enough to mention Cliff Richard, Elton John, Bernie Taupin,  Diana Dors, Russ Abbot, Chris Squire, the former F1 businessman Eddie Jordan, Bryan Forbes, the Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson, Sir Bruce Forsyth, Bill Bryson including the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet had a residence in that place.

That small attraction  boasts several superb surprises and it is an excellent destination for all the visitors who want to enlarge a plan of excursions with significant visits during a stay in the United Kingdom.

It is certainly a stage much more than suggested to insert in a planned itinerary which can include the most captivating surroundings of the British Capital with a notable historic, cultural patrimony next to an incomparable, inspiring countryside which in its kind is a further, great highlight bewitching a multitude of people which also enchanted the Film Industry for its stunning, green and intact setting selected in several occasions as scene of notorious movies.
 
When you enter in the boundaries of Virginia Water once left Train Station Parade you will immediately have a great, positive impact facing a very charming environment and you will notice in a while in those first metres along an elegant, pleasant walkway why that place is so special and highly attractive. 

Everything all around is perfectly conserved, the local setting is magnificently  highlighted by stylish, scenic cottages embellished by fascinating flowerbeds, small gardens, a stupendous architectural network which includes outstanding Victorian houses encircled by a magnificent natural frame composed by appealing forests, an image which represents in all its splendour the most enchanting, old England.

The municipal core is mainly arranged around Christchurch Road starting its course in proximity of the Railway Station crossing a large part of the local boundaries leading to the distinctive local park where lies that famous waters basin.

 Wellington Avenue is another important point of reference consisting in a pretty long boulevard crossing that long artery, representing an important axis linking the southern side of the agglomeration to the northern extra radius area  parallel to London Road.
  
The municipality has two local Religious sites such as the Parish Christ Church and Virginia Methodist Church, the first situated along Christchurch Road while the second is located south of the railway on Cabrera Avenue.

That magnificent  Eden thanks to the proximity of London was already famous in old times when the Royal family did not loose the chances to reach the local territory to enjoy some of rooted passions of many of its members such ad horse riding, hunting or simply walking to breathe the peace and serenity of that Paradise far from the busy life at court.

All that also happened in a more contemporary era when a renowned  figure as King Edward VIII, eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary well known for his very short reign endured from 20th January to 11th December 1936, date of his abdication decided to have a residence very close to the current centre often frequenting that area.

In the course of its history that land suffered a flood in the 18th century which generated some damages but the recovery was pretty fast and the Royalty extremely in love with that land did everything to save the integrity of that site.

The immensity and beauty of Windsor Great Park is immediately inviting for anyone, a fabulous highlight Virginia Water Lake, a body of water formed by the river Bourne developed by Henry Flitcroft, a major English architect closely linked to the second generation of the Palladianism, a work which took place between 1748 and 1752 for William, Duke of Cumberland. 

A former dam which suffered severely damaged by a flood in 1768 was re-established in 1780 moved at approximately 250,0 metres of distance further east, a work by the brothers Paul and Thomas Sandby who created in addition some scenic points around that waters basin such as  Obelisk Pond, Meadow Pond and waterfalls. 

Those operations were commissioned by King George III well known to have been Monarch of Great Britain, Ireland, Prince of Hannover who furthermore decided to enlarge the size of the parkland purchasing other lands.

That superb local attraction was selected to film some scenes of the famous Harry Potter movie, that popular and successful saga consisting in a series of seven novels written by J.K Rowling, a masterpiece published on 26th June 1997 which enchanted a multitude of people in the world.

After a meticulous analysis of other candidated sites in the United Kingdom, the film-maker David Heyman and Warner Bros had not hesitations to choose that extremely scenic waters basin as one of the environments protagonists of that renowned movie.

Worth an additional mention that place was also chosen for another great film as Robin Hood, directed by Ridley Scott, starring Russel Crowe, Max von Sydow, William Hurt, Mark Strong, Oscar Isaac, Cate Blanchett released in 2010, opening movie at Cannes Film Festival in the same year.

A further historic detail which gave notoriety to that lake was the capture of a big pike with a weight of  58 lbs which according to recorded statistics was  the biggest caught in all the history of the United Kingdom in a waters basin.

That park boasts an immaculate aspect, greatly conserved with a grass which could be compared to the surface of a Wimbledon Tennis court, representing the typical, distinctive image of a fascinating green huge extension of Britain.

Apart that it also has a pleasant cosmopolitan, characterful aspect with several exotic details greatly inserted in that marvellous, natural scenery some of them pretty far from the traditional British landscapes, architecture and culture.

Linked to that you can start the visit admiring Thomas Sandby´s Cascade, an ornamental waterfall  inaugurated in 1797 consisting in a wonderful, small replica of the famous Rheinfall located in the Swiss municipalities of Neuhausen and Laufen-Uhwiesen.

That beautiful work took its name by the artist who executed it, an English draughtsman, architect, teacher and watercolour painter from Nottingham who in 1743 was appointed as Deputy Ranger of Windsor Park and in the same year covered the position of private secretary of the Duke of Cumberland.

Sandby despite the difference in size created a strong resemblance with that striking wonder situated near the beautiful town of Schaffausen in Switzerland not far from Zurich, including the natural frame was remarkably developed to appear very similar to the original, certainly a great landscape masterpiece by a talented mind with a great imagination.

Also the ancient times are protagonists in that stupendous park where you can admire a Roman Temple erected with columns transported to Virginia Water in the 19th century from Leptis Magna,  a notorious former historic city situated in the current Libya founded by the Phoenicians, later notable Carthaginian settlement before to have been a considerable domain of the Imperial Rome.

That attraction reminiscent a glorious Empire of the past despite a different territorial environment is in total harmony with the local scenery as a fantastic representation in which the stunning nature embraces the iconic architecture of a distant emblematic civilisation.

That view of those architectural elements of immense, historic value  immediately transmits in a while a sort of imaginary trip flying towards that legendary stronghold of the Emperor Septimius Severus who ruled that ancient centre which was for a period more important than the capital of the Byzantine Empire, Constantinople.

That presence in a fascinating park of a a pleasant Surrey village despite pretty unusual appears as something of simply  extraordinary delighting the human eye at first sight.

Continuing the visit you will also meet a superb Oriental representation consisting in a typical, traditional Chinese Junk ship also that immediately bewitches the visitors transporting their imagination in a sort of transcontinental jump to the most fascinating Far East.

You are in England but that presence reminds in a while the banks of the legendary seaport of Guangzhou and those glorious Tang and Song dynasties which sailed all around the Asiatic seas until reaching Egypt with their big, historic vessels which also transmitted deep inspirations  to other civilisations often depicted in draws as models of naval constructions in old times.

Furthermore to embellish that idyllic huge green space, the Canadian State of British Columbia donated the English Queen a great present consisting in an original Totem, indisputable symbol of the Indian natives of that Northern American country

That was a clear signal of friendship between two countries both members of the Commonwealth of the Nations which shared a common past closely related to a colonisation which left relevant rooted marks in Canada visible nowadays in many cultural aspects with several historic stages and events lived together which consolidated constant relationships between those two lands still alive despite the distance.

What is extremely great is that all those varied, diverse representations present in that wonderful natural Eden so different one from another for provenance, eras, origin, culture are perfectly and harmoniously integrated in the scenery. 

They are all protagonists placed in strategic corners, not established in a bizarre succession or in peculiar positions with the risk to ruin the aesthetic image of a splendid environment and that monumental layout was brilliantly  studied to surprise the visitor in a while.

The splendid forests surrounding Virginia Water are other fabulous marvels you can not miss to visit during a lovely walk there. 

They are a divine hymn to the beauty of the true British countryside boasting a relevant fauna consisting in foxes, squirrels, deer, a wide variety of birds of different species such as Buzzard, Red Kite, Jackdaws, Woodcock, Barn, Marsh Tit, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatches, and Goldcrests among others.

That presence undoubtedly makes that park an  ideal destination for passionate ornithologists who  are often there to study the land, permanence, migrations of those volatiles towards the Southern countries of Europe but also for  many families with children who want to see all those animals appearing from time to time in picturesque paths delighting the view of many people.

All the great colours with a large variety of tonalities of the local vegetation are highly captivating all year, every season is a magnificent chance to admire the changes of nature making that place a charming picture of a corner highly beloved by several landscape painters since a long time ago. 

Golf is another relevant, iconic highlight of that classy Surrey village hosting in its boundaries the glorious Wentworth  Golf Club, one of the most prestigious Institutions linked to that trendy sport boasting a wonderful complex which  includes four golf courses with different coefficients of gap.

That emblematic site is also the headquarter of the PGA European Tour, the second international circuit in the world just behind PGA U.S.A and next to that great traditions it was also protagonist of a historic edition of the famed Ryder Cup, one of the most prestigious International competitions well known worldwide.

For that many famous golfers decided to live or they lived in Virginia Water such as Sandy Lyle, Nick Faldo, Sam Torrance, Ernie Els, Bernard Gallagher and Thomas Bjørn among others.

In the case you want to enjoy a meal, snack or simply a cool drink close to the station you can stop at La Piazzetta, it is a good authentic Italian restaurant opened approximately 20 years ago very popular and well known in the county.

To fill a splendid day with other special places in the immediate surrounding you ca reach the nearest mentioned Ascot but also the iconic Windsor with its marvellous Castle, official residence of the British Royal family. (I wrote a post about that place if you are interested).

I suggest you furthermore  to visit the  nearest Parish of Old Windsor boasting in its boundaries a beautiful medieval Church dedicated to the Saints Peter and Andrew, a marvellous stone, Ecclesiastic complex which was destroyed by the French troops but totally rebuilt in the early 13th century. 

That Religious site is also well known because it was probably elevated on the foundation of a former Chapel attached to the former hunting Lodge property of Edward the Confessor well known to have been the last King of the House of Wessex ruling England in the 11th century.

Virginia Water boasts a perfect and strategic location situated at just 13,0 kilometres from London Heathrow International Airport, well linked to the major centre of the United Kingdom by Motorways M25,M4 and M3 and its railway station has connections to London Waterloo Station and the town of Reading.

If you are planning a tailor made tour across Southern Great Britain, that place is a wonderful idea to complete your itinerary with a significant stage with a very easy drop off of the car in the case you are enjoying a spectacular Fly & Drive and certainly you will be delighted by the fascinating beauty of something which will imprint in your most pleasant memories, great images to remember forever.

That beautiful county is a geographic point rich of fascination, large plains bordered by virgin forests historic places which wrote indelible pages of history of that Kingdom and a stop in that splendid classy Surrey village with its fascinating park will be as to take home a piece of old, traditional and classic England which is alive more than ever in a place as Virginia Water in all  its splendour and appeal.
