Champorcher is a splendid Alpine destination of Italy and thanks to its incomparable charm and appeal it is considered a spectacular and historic Aosta Valley resort located in that marvellous Northwestern Region enclosed within the Piedmont Region, Switzerland and France in a land that due the proximity of those relevant neighbours and also ancient civilisations who left indelible cultural marks enriching its territory created a great cocktail of cultures in that beautiful territory entirely surrounded by the majestic Alps.

The resort is just the 115,0 kilometres far from the wonderful  Chamonix Mont Blanc, one of the Queens of the Alps and all that is a further chance to plan another mangificent radial excursions visiting those iconic place in the elite of the Top Ski Resorts and well known to be a chic, stylish and very glamorous place at the foot of the highest peak of Europe.

In addition the town is part of the large Mountain Community of the Monte Rosa the second giant of the Alps and also that territory offers a wide selection of great sites to visit as Gressoney la Trinite and its Lys Valley I strongly suggest you in the shade of that other superb height. (I wrote a post about that resort if you are interested)

Champorcher apart that and its ski slopes highly appreciated next to a ski lift complex of high level, which makes it a princess of winter sports, boasts a great range of very comfortable accommodations, the Hospitality industry works very well there where the tourist is sacredexcellent restaurants offering the best local traditional cuisine and many things to do.

That site is also a great climatic destination thanks to an uncontaminated atmosphere due to a total absence of industries in its boundaries and surroundings and also for that it is a place which boast a notable fame with many chances to spend holidays in that paradise all year.

Special destination for lovers of trekking, hiking, mountaineering next to them a large number of cyclists and mountain bikers who love that place for its ample variety of itineraries crossing stunning Alpine passes, in a territory rich of superb climbs and mixed routes of immense beauty with unforgettable landscapes and for that a beloved Eden for a multitude of photographers too.

Apart all those brilliant features  the current municipality was since many centuries ago one of the historical stages along the road leading to the famous Roman towns of Aosta and Ivrea, the latter located in a sub county of Piedmont called Canavese, a more than relevant route which has always been an important cradle of busy commerce since the times of the Imperial Rome as strategic cross point towards the Gaul.

Along that former trail traced by that iconic civilisation in the Middle Ages the new rulers re-took that properous hallway with protagonists the French and Swiss merchants that along it reached the valleys of the region and the city of Turin which was in that times also a famous market place and that it is another proposal for people who want to retrace that itinerary with something of historic extremely significant.

Worth a special mention the locals, very friendly, welcoming and always ready to give you tips and advises about places to visit and that is very appreciated by the visitors.

Champorcher is traditionally a bilingual small town. The inhabitants fluently speak Italian and French and we could say trilingual because they also speak another one, the Patois, an old French Provencal language also known as Arpitan.

The French language is spoken because the autonomous Aosta Valley is since a long time ago officially a bilingual Italian region. Since the times of the ancient Roman colonisation, those Northern Italic lands have always had constant cultural contacts and relationships with the nearest Gaul populated by Gallic tribes who settled in that famous area called by Rome Gallia Cisalpina.

That region has absorbed in the course of its secular history several influences from France due to its geographic proximity because it has always been a very relevant gateway for many Francophone people who travelled and also settled all around those several valleys scattered at the borders between the Italian peninsula and that country.

Historic Stronghold of the Kingdom of Piedmont and Sardinia ruled by the Savoy Royalty who for heritage continued to use the native language of the ancestors as tells its name linked to a very important Duchy from that region of France they never deleted from the region the French as linguistic expression and those secular roots never disappeared.

The Patois is spoken by almost all the locals and it is considered the most ancient Gaul Romance language and worth a special mention that region Aosta Valley is the European area with more Patois speaking. The locals consider it fundamental part pf their culture left by the oldest generation and they continue to use it in family,in social activities and in daily life.

The difference with the current French and the Patois Valdotaine is the replacement of some vocals with others in a word often in the final replacing for example the letter E with an A,there are some differences in sounds of certain accents, in some verbal endings and different emphasis due to local secular influences but in the morphology there are many similarities..

Nowadays it is mainly spoken in rural area, originally the Patois was considered by the French high social class a sort of dialect but despite that all people linked to that very ancient language never abandoned it continuing to speak it.

That still existent "international" or cosmopolitan atmosphere if we cn use those adjectives despite the small size of that Northern Italian region and also in Champorcher is something you can breathe there in every corner and in every aspect such as architecture, culture, traditions, gastronomy and local folklore and it is really fantastic to discover how the Aosta Valley offers a very considerable historical and cultural heritage with those relevant marks jeaulosly conserved.

Closely linked to that is also the name Champorcher consisting in  the composition of two words as Champ meaning campus or place and the former francophone word Porcier later replaced with Porcher due to local linguistic influences is a French  name deriving from the Latin word Portius, name of a soldier enlisted in the famous Theban Legion.

That famous Roman division was sent to the French Gaul during the campaign of the Imperial Rome led by the Emperor Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maximianus Herculius.

It was in 286 when the Theban Legion formed by over 6000 men with its Generals,  Centurions and Legionaries refused to follow the orders of the Emperor to kill some Gauls who among other things were already assimilated  and using the Latin language.

Due that sort mutiny  the Emperor sent in the current France 20,000 soldiers to punish those rebels. The soldiers coming from Rome exterminated the major part of those 6000 men.The few survivors  fled in various locations and Portius (Porcier) was one of them finding refuge in the current town which took his name.

The former soldier became a kind of missionary,he preached the Christianity in the area and he never returned to Rome due to possible reprisals  and among other things was elevated as a venerated  Saint.

The former settlement in ancient times was a rural area, the inhabitants were mainly shepherds and farmers. The first official historic documentations about that small town despite it was already known along the Alpine roads by the Romans appeared  in official maps in the Middle Ages, exactly in the 13th century.

In those times the Aosta Valley was characterised by a strict and very rigid feudal system established by influential local Lords who ruled with strong authority the territories. In the case of the Champorcher the Governors were the Seigneurs de Bard.

That powerful noble dynasty was the owner of a vast territory including the current resort and the nearest villages of Vert, Donnas,Hône,Bard, Amad and also an important centre as Pont Saint Martin,a relevant cross point linking several other valleys.

Guillaume and Hugues de Bard were two brothers owners of  those lands but they started a long dispute to decide who could have more power generating a internal fight. Those two characters wanted to have a total domain and for long time after several battles the territory lived periods of terror and devastation.

The Castle which was the stronghold of those two contenders also was severely damaged and all ended in a sort of treaty between those two men who  decided to subdivide their properties in two sections one for both.

It was in 1242 when Chaporcher had a radical historical change when those araristocrats did not accept the submission to the powerful Duchy of Savoy future rulers of Italy and after several clashes, the village was incorporated by the Duke Amedeo IV  who conquered the entire valley into the dominion of that famed noble House already present in Piedmont and in other areas of Aosta Valley.

The Savo House governed the town sending there high ducal officers  and only a small territory was left to that family who lost  possible future claims and rights also due to the death of the last descendant in the 18th century.

In that period Champorcher became a centre very active also thanks to the discovery in its territory of some mines of iron and other minerals with their extractions that  increased the local economy and the town also developed another important activity linked to the production of hemp which had since that a very positive start-up the.

In those years the Kingdom of Piedmont and Sardinia with its capital Turin was constantly present in the region with distinguished figures linked to the Royalty. The intolerance of the local farmers under the dominion of the Savoy due to a kind of feudalism and other abuses which for them never brought improvements generated three revolts at the turn of the late 18th century and early 19th century. Those riots were called the Révolt des Socques and the word "Socques" because that people wore as local traditional wooden clogs.

The relationship with the rulers improved after the reunification of Italy in 1861 when the King Victor Emmanuel to have the support of the locals in a new national reality based on unity and brotherhood decided to develope in the local areas new roads suitable for the farmers and their activities.

The construction of them was in any case as a sort of treaty because the Savoy Royal Family wanted in exchange for the construction a voluntary work not paid to the residents who accepted for the simple reason that those new and more advanced communications were useful to improve thei quality of life of the entire community.

The development of that main road gave the locals major prosperity and wealthy and it also became a comfortable access for the Royal Family and its entourage who often visited the area for hunting. In the late 19th century the town was one of the favourite destinations of the Savoy House for the chamois hunting in a valley very rich of those kinds animals that are today a protected specie.

Due to the memory of that passion of the former Monarchs but also in honor of that protected animal the Region and the Local Tourism Board developed a route called Il Sentiero della Caccia, the Hunting Path reminiscent  the places visited by the former Kings of Italy.

The centre of the town is arranged around its Parish Church and the medieval castle north of the river Ayasse also bathing the neighbourhoods Dublanc and Perrier located along the National Road SS 26 consisting in the the main entrance of Champorcher while west of the municipal heart lies the ski lifts complex and all the boundaries are fantastically  surrounded by magnificent natural frame consisting in beautiful Alpine forests dominated by the majestic Alps..

One of the most important local attraction considered a landmark and where you can start the visit is La Tour de Bard or Torre dei Bar, name took by the rulers  an impressive stoned medieval tower symbol of the town also called Chateau de Champorcher,Castle of Champorcher, today not appropriate because that towered structure originally part of a former fortress established in the Middle Ages by the local Lords is the only architectural element remained of the former construction elevated in the 13th century but with suppositions that there was one already in the 11th century probably consisting in a wooden structure.

According to historic documentations that established later was erected using a mix of materials consisting in stones and timber. The stoned current aspect is because it was destroyed in a fire during the dispute between during the clash between Hugues and Guillaume Bard those two brothers rulers of Champorcher in that time andtotally restored by the Dukes of Savoy Dukes in 1320.

The imposing crenellated construction 15,0 metres high lies on a plateau established on an irregular square plan, elevated as a checkpoint in a strategical point dominating the entire valley of Champorcher. The architectural appearance is partially similar to some fortified buildings of  Provence, Haute-Savoie and Dauphiné,for height, shape and material used including for the presence of a arched window a few meters below the top and small slots on the facade while a doorway is situated approximately at 3,80 metres from the ground reachable by a ladder.

In 1861 in the year of the proclamation of the new Kingdom of Italy that tower became a property of the municipality and in 1980 it had some restorations and a refurbishment of the facades.

Very close lies the Eglise de Saint Nicholas or Chiesa di San Nicola a Church dedicated to St,Nicholas. That Religious building is the local  Parish Church, a Christian Catholic Temple erected in the 16th century but built over the foundations of another one erected in medieval times probably over a Chapel established in the 15th century by the family de Bard.

The current structure you can admire nowadays is the result of a integral reconstruction dated 1728 by an architect from the Valsesia called Jean Fer, erected on a rectangular plat with an ample facade under a splendid gable roof, it boasts three long arched windows established above a charming portico and it is flanked by two wings both with a vaulted window and covered by sloping roofs.

The layout consists in a nave and two aisles,a doorway placed beneath stylish with arcades supported by strong columns. Inside you can admire a carved wooden altarpiece in Baroque style by Giovanni Battista Gilardi and in the main altar as main highlights you can see some statues depicting Saints among them the Patron Saint Nicholas

The altars on the aisles are works in Baroque style dated the 19th century by an aritst from the Val D Ayas called Claude-Maurice Freydoz very active all around the region. In the Church by a door located on the left side you can visit a Museum containing some sculpures, Religious items and other Sacred objects.

Very charming is the stoned bell tower erected on a square plan and very interesting are the architectural arrangements with a big spire surmounted by  a very scenic pinnacle topped by a Christian cross and a further highlight is the beautiful  belfry embellished by the presence of a refined execution of ample open curved windows containing a bell dated 1548.

I suggest you to visit the very pleasant neighbourhood of Chardonnay where you can visit Casa Thomas also known as Maison Thomas. It is a splendid, typical Alpine house and apart its charming traditional exterior architecture its interior is greatly highlighted by splendid carved wooden decorations and that visit is a great chance to admire a little masterpiece with charming furniture, the kitchen, a small living room, bed very interesting to know better the local domestic life of the past.

Every year that site is protagonist of a venerated a pilgrimage on 5th august with many people reaching that Alpine sanctuary to pay homage to the Virgin Mary with a procession with torches with many locals but also several people coming from the towns of Fenis and Cogne.

Very suggested and recommended a great excursion in a itinerary which includes seven magnificent and spectacular gorges. One is in the resort and it is called La Goille de Pourset while the others are all located in the nearest villages.
