Eurostar | Trains with 100% renewable energy by 2030
Eurostar, the international high-speed rail service operating in Western Europe connecting Great Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany, has officially launched its first sustainability report, with goals focused on enabling more than 30 million passengers to travel in Europe in a sustainable way.
This action is planned by 2030 with the aim to reduce carbon emissions by reducing the impact of renewable energy and at the same time its energy needs.
Eurostar also puts its efforts into integrating circularity into its system reducing waste and using resources optimally in the production – end-of-life process, taking into account sustainable sourcing with respect for the environment.
Another goal of the railway group is to attract more and more passengers to use its low-carbon services by developing open hubs and connecting to national air networks that operate long-haul routes, hence the partnership with KLM the famous dutch airline.
Eurostar's objectives also aim to elevate the brand's reputation as a driver of gearboxes in the entire railway sector by working closely with all partners in a team effort. Directly linked to this aspect is the recent alliance with RE100 with companies that are committed to refuelling 100% of their energy from renewable sources.
The railway group then pointed out that in the Netherlands since 2017 Eurostar trains have been 100% wind-powered, in Great Britain it has been consolidated at 40% in 2023 and that in February in Belgium an agreement was signed with Infrabel to study the installation of solar devices on motor trains.
The CEOs of Eurostar said that the transport sector is currently responsible for 25% of the European continent's greenhouse gas emissions, making high-speed rail sustainable in a solution to a quarter of the continent's climate problem, and excited that the company is at the forefront of renewable energy powering rail networks.
Further statements include working closely with more than 400 companies to enable 30 million trips a year powered by renewable energy and calling on other companies to do the same.
In conjunction with all this, Eurostar has also received an Award from Food Made Good for the catering it provides on board the trains.
Surely Eurostar with this remarkable effort is setting an example at a global level with a very important step regarding the future of renewable energy and the journey has already begun.
