India | Goal to Consolidate into Top Ten Destinations in the World in Five Years

The authorities of India are planning to significantly strengthen the position of the country in the global tourism sector with the aim of entering the top ten of the most popular tourist destinations in the world in the next five years.

Despite the growing presence of the Asian market internationally, with various destinations steadily progressing and attracting many visitors , India's overall contribution to international tourist arrivals remains rather modest, considering India's significant recovery in terms of incoming since 2002 when a previous downward trend was effectively reversed.

India's Minister of Tourism and Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat  plans to significantly strengthen the Asian country's position in the global tourism sector ranking, occupying top positions over the next five years, confirming that the country is already taking steps to increase its status in the global tourism market.

Nowadays, India occupies the 39th position out of 119 countries in terms of popularity among tourists internationally, but the government remains confident in making progress in terms of image in the coming years.

The Minister commented that tourism contributes 10.4% to the world economy while India currently reaches only 7.9%  of this figure, but he is optimistic that the country will exceed the global average and bring this percentage to more than 10%.

As a strategy to achieve these results there will be a particular focus on the development of tourist routes starring those Indian regions that until now are not very popular among international visitors.

Currently, the vast majority of international tourists visit only 9 of the 28 states of India, the Delhi National District alone accounts for 65% of all visits, although recently the interest in the lesser-known regions of India has begun to grow, a detail that the Minister sees as a positive trend for the future development of the tourism sector in these territories.
