SAS, Scandinavian Airlines, flag carrier of Denmark, Norway and Sweden has officially joined the SkyTeam global alliance, one of the world's three major airline alliances founded in June 2000.
This entry marks a significant step forward for the airline by expanding the global reach of this alliance with SAS passengers now having greater access to more than 1.600 destinations within SkyTeam's extensive global network, opening up new opportunities in regions such as Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.
SAS already has codeshare agreements signed with Air France – KLM with future forecasts that will open up further codeshare opportunities with other SkyTeam partners.
The Scandinavian airline faced very significant challenges a few years ago during the Covid-19 pandemic that led it to file for Chapter 11.
Thus SAS recently announced that it had achieved a major hit in its enforcement proceedings and with an agreement that gives the Air France – KLM group about 19.9% ownership of SAS.
In addition to that there is an option to increase its stake in a global controlling stake after two years.
This development also paved the way for SAS to join the SkyTeam alliance of which Air France is a founding member.
