The Azores | Reiterating and Actions for its Ongoing Commitment to Sustainable Tourism

The Azores, archipelago in the mid - Atlantic and autonomous region of Portugal well known for its islands characterized by fishing villages, green pastures, dramatic landscapes and hedgerows of blue hydranges through the Regional Secretary of Mobility and Infrastructure Berta Cabral reiterated the archipelago's constant commitment to sustainability.

This focal point will be the central pillar of tourism development, arguing that the strategy of the Azores government is very well defined for the sector that currently represents the greatest leverage for the regional economy.

The Regional Secretary of Mobility and Infrastructure commented that this commitment is based on four fundamental strategic objectives such as consolidating the Azores as a sustainable tourist destination at an international level, reducing seasonality and distributing tourist flows, raising quality standards and generating greater value and increasing awareness among the final consumer.

The Government of the Azores has fully implemented the Strategic Marketing Plan for Tourism in the Archipelago – PEMTA 2030 and the Secretary commented on this issue that this is a critical objective not only because it is a seal of guarantee of the quality of the Azores destination but above all because it validates and confirms the conscious choice and commitment by local institutions for a true process of sustainable development.

The Regional Secretariat has been working internally for some months on a process of reformulation of the territorial management of tourism in the Azores with plans that will include the complete revision of POTRAA, the Tourism Master Plan for the Azores Region prepared in order to develop and consolidate a sustainable sector which will soon be submitted to a public tender to select a specialized consultant.

In addition, the development of a promotion plan for the IATA Winter 2024 – 2025 period named Visit Azores is underway, which will be presented in the coming weeks with various actions of considerable internal and external importance in the program, including the launch of promotional initiatives and important events with the aim of reducing seasonality.
