Albania, country in southeast Europe in the western part of the Balkan Peninsula on the Adriatic and Ionian Seas and facing the Strait of Otranto crossed in its interior by the Albanian Alps showing a stunning mountainous scenery, with an important cultural and historical heritage confirmed by the presence of a large number of castles, historical buildings and archaeological sites is proving to be the fastest growing tourist destination in Europe and the world.
The Balkan country has recorded a growth of 55% in the current year compared to the same period in 2023, considering the medium-large economies, although it is true that it had the advantage of starting from a situation of almost absence of tourism in previous decades for reasons related to historical vicissitudes.
The data collected are in any case very positive considering that in the month of September alone Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza located 11.0 kilometres northwest of the Albanian capital in the municipality of of Krujë - Durrës County, the only major airport in the country, had an increase of 47% with more than 1 million passengers.
The airline that led air traffic in the Albanian hub was Wizz Air, Hungarian ultra-low carrier with 53% while Ryanair which arrived later at this airport reached 22% as regards passengers arriving at Tirana airport.
With these statistical data, Albania seems to be almost entirely a low-cost destination both for accommmodation, mainly via holiday homes and for the airlines that transport passengers.
As a relevant figure so far this year, not including the last three months, Tirana Airport had more than 8.0 million passengers, which is a big difference compared to 2023 total when it exceeded of approximately 7.0 million.
