Athens, the capital of Greece and of the Attica region, cradle of a powerful civilization and empire still dominated by ancient, iconic landmarks, one of the world's oldest cities in the world woth its recorded history spanning over 3.400 years, emblematic centre for the arts, education, democracy and philosophy, cosmopolitan metropolis and economic, financial and cultural centre facing the Aegean Sea through its municipality in partnership with the social benefit company Action Plus launched "Athenian Walks" an initiative to showcase the city's rich heritage through guided walking tours.
This captivating tourist proposal began on 18th January 2025 offering residents and visitors the great opportunity to explore and discover the city's rich history enjoying various museums, archaeological sites, monuments and picturesque neighborhoods of the largest and most populous centre of Greece.
The initiative "Athenian Walks" includes guided tours of the Byzantine and Christian Museum, emblematic, permanent exhibition arranged around five themes preserving and exhibiting the Byzantine and Post – Byzantine cultural heritage in the Hellenic territory and a trove of religious art and artefacts from the Byzantine Empire era to the 21st century, the National Glypthothek, sculpture museum established in 2004 and the National Gallery, outstanding exhibition devoted to Greek and European Art from the 14th to the 20th century.
Other guided tours are dedicated to the National Archaeologial Museum, considered one the greatest museums in the world containing important Hellenic artifacts from a variety of archaeological locations around Greece from prehistory to late antiquity, the Municipal Gallery of Athens boasting a rich collection of nearly 3.000 works from leading 19th – and 20th – century Greek artists.
Further guided walking tours include the Acropolis Museum,
archaeological exhibition focused on the findings of the archaeological site of
the iconic Acropolis, housing artifacts from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and
Byzantine Greece and the Numismatic Museum which displays a great collection of
over 500.000 coins, medals, gems, weights, stamps and related artefact from
1400 BC to the modern era.
" Athenian Walks" was developed to serve adults, children from 7 to 10 years old and social groups that face cultural access barriers, with the aim of promoting inclusion and advancing social and cultural equality.
