Costa Rica | Excelling as a Relevant Destination for Birdwatching Tourism

Costa Rica, country in the Central American region, well known for its attractive coastlines on the Caribbean and Pacific boasting idyllic beaches, rainforests, volcans, a rich biosiversity, recognised as one of the happiest nations in the world by World Happiness Report, land highlighted by the motto "Pura Vida", associated with a sense of wellbeing, positivity and gratitude is also excelling as a relevant destination for birdwatching tourism.

The central American nation has half a dozen endemic species and 12 nodes have been identified for observation in a territory which boasts a natural habitat of some 935 species of birdlife, a fact that allowed the promotion of birdwatching, presenting enormous potential to grow even more in this tourism niche which focuses on the observing of birds, either as a recreational activity or as a form of citizen science.

Data coming from the Costa Rican Tourism Institute confirm that 12.3% of visitors registered by air carry out birdwatching with special equipment, being one of the main destinations in the Central American region concerning this tourism segment.

According to the National Audubon Society, American non-profit organization dedicated to conservation of birds and their habitat, founded in 1905 and headquartered in New York, more than 4.500 species have been recorded in Costa Rica, an achievement that consolidated the country as one of the richest in sightings in the Western Hemisphere, making it a great sancturary fot birdwatching lovers.

The enormous potential of Costa Rica concerning this tourism niche elevated the country as a top destination and the National Birdwatching Board pointed out that it will be of great impact to advance the consolidation of well - labelled trails of medium difficulty,with the presence of viewpoints, platforms, feeding stations and native plants of the region for local birds.
