Portugal, a southern European country on the Iberian Peninsula bordered by Spain and the Atlantic Ocean, a very demanded destination, boasting a very rich historic and cultural heritage, a land with stunning beaches, a captivating countryside, vibrant and lively cities and towns with a delicious gastronomy all around its territory experienced that tourism reached all – time highs according to the INE, Portugal’s National Institute of Statistics.
Tourism activity in Portugal continues with spectacular data, in such way that is expected ro reach a record in 2024, only with the data offered, still preliminary and the INE has confirmed that last year, tourist accommodation establishments registered 31.6 million guests and 80.3 million overnight stay with an annual increase that was 5.2% in the number of tourists and 4% in the number of accommodations which represent an all – time record.
An additional detail reported that in December 2024 alone the tourist accommodation sector recorded 1.9 million guests and 4.2 million overnight stays, which represent an increase of 3.6% more guests and 2.9% more nights in hotels and with regard to occupancy in national tourist accommodation, it reached 32.2% and 39.2% in the net occupancy rate per bed per room, respectively.
In Portugal, overnight stay from international markets predominated, according for 70.3% of total overnight stays in 2024, with a total of 56.4 million.
The United Kingdom continues to be the leading source of market and in 2024 it accounted for nearly two out of ten, specifically 18.1% of overnight stays by non - residents, followed by the German, 11.3%., Spanish, 9.7%, North American, 9.2%, and French, 8% markets with the largest increases corresponding to tourists from Canada with 17.1% and the United States of America, 12.1%.
The Portugal’s National Institute of Statistics highlighted that in international markets, the British continued to be the main source market with 13.7% share, having registered a slight decrease by 0.2% followed by Spain, 13.2% which decreased by 10% and among the 10 main source markets in December 2024, the Polish market once again stood out for the largest increase by 13.9%.
