Sidi Bou Said - Tunisia | A Candidate to Become a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Sidi Bou Said, a very attractive town in northern Tunisia located about 20 kilometres from the capital, Tunis, perched on a cliffside with dramatic views over the Mediterranean, known for its picturesque cobbled streets and suggestive blue and - white manicured. houses, charming doors and sprawling bouganinvillea, a popular spot for artists,which offers a unique glimpse in the cultural heart and history of the Maghreb region is a candidate to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The application for the city to enter in the World Heritage Sites has already been signed by the Minister of Cultural Affairs, Amina Srafi, tto achieve a title that is awarded to landmarks and areas with legal protection under an international treaty administered by UNESCO for having cultural, historical or scientific significance.

This Tunisian centre spreading a bohemian atmosphere has become synomymus with art and history, with its art galleries which line the lanes and where the emblematic Dar El Annabi, a historic house with wax figures in traditional costume and the iconic Ennejma Ezzahra Palace which features arches, ornate stucco. and patterned tilework are protagonists.

This centre still has the reputation of being a town of artists who lived in Si Bou Said, or at least visited it such as Paul Klee, Gustave - Henri Jossot, August Macke, Saro Lo Turco, Louis Moillet and Rodolphe d' Erlanger who applied the white and blue theme everywhere in this suggestive and captivating destination.

At UNESCO headquarters in Paris, the application will be studied and evaluated within a period of one and half years and will focus on key aspects such as architectural and artistic heritage, as well as the social and cultural interaction that characterises Sidi Bou Said.

The final results could be announced in the second half of 2026, which will constitute an important moment on the road of the town of Sidi Bou Said towards the global recognition of its cultural heritage, thus reinforcing its position as an exceptional destination.
