Acapulco, Mexico | Sport Tourism, a Key Driver to Recovery and Relaunch the Destination

Acapulco, or Acapulco de Juárez, famed city and major seaport in the state of Guerrero, set on a large, deep, semicircular bay backed by high - rises and the scenic Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains that was named years ago the “Riviera of Mexico” for several tourists attracted by the climate, many luxurious hotels, top golf courses, beautiful beaches and deep - sea fishing, made famous by the jet set in 1950s and ‘60s, a seaside resort known for its high - energy nightlife and vibrant atmosphere found in sport tourism a key driver to recovery and relaunch the destination.

The Mexican city reaffirms itself as a relevant stage for international sporting events, consolidating its growth and recovery thanks to a stunning agenda full of activities that have generated great expectations and economic benefits for Acapukco promoted by the State Government headed by the Minister Evelyn Salgado Pineda.

 A spectacular exhibition on a floating court over the stunning Bay of Santa Lucia was the 32th edition of the Mexican Tennis Open concluded with great success after a week full of emotions. The tournament alone registered an attendance of more than 75.000 people, a very significant increase compared to the 25.000 attendees were received in the 2024 edition.

Acapulco also hosted other high – impact events suxh as Urban Trail Acapulco 2025 which took place in the Traditional Zone, with the departure from the emblematic La Quebrada, located immediately above the Zocalo, the centre of the city, one of the most famous tourist attractions in the state where divers enterntain tourists by jumping off either of two ledges on the cliff bringing together more than 1.000 competitors in two challenging routes, one of 5.0 kilometres with a slope of 200 metres and another of 10.0 kiloetres with a slope of 430 metres.

In addition the Tour del Sol was held, a challenging cycling race that included a route from Barra Vieja, famous location highlighted by it’s the beauty of its stunning beach southeast of Acapulco, following the road to the airport to Bonfil Beach, a beautiful secluded beach, popular spot for surfers, with a reputation for good waves and with its immediate proximity excellent seafood restaurants.

On 9th Msrch Acapulco hosted the Mexican Open Water Circuit, and the “Apolonio Castillo Diaz” Last Marathon with distances of 1.25K, 2.5K and 5K, other events that reaffirms Acapulco also in varied type of sports.

Another important event which will take in Acapulco from 20th to 28th March 2025 is the 2nd U - 15 Women’s Pan American Softball Championship at the Vicente Suárez Sport Unit with the participation of teams from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico and the United States.

The relevance of these events in Acapulco is undoubtedly reflected in the great impact they generate for the Mexican destination, with a hotel occupancy of up to 87%, an influx of about 123.000 visitors which generated an economic spill of approximately 1.016 million pesos only from 24th February to 2nd March 2025, which means an incredible boost for the tourism development of Acapulco.

In this regard the Secretary of Tourism of the State of Guerrero, Simón Quiñones Orozco said that the development of international sporting events, such as the Mexican Tennis Open, the Urban Trail and the announcement of the Pan American Softball Championships contribute enormously to the generation of jobs and the economic strengthening of Acapulco and at the same time, the celebration of these  important sport competitions in the city demonstrate the great capacity of Acapulco’s infrastructure to host top - level international events.

The state official also reported that in Acapulco there are currently 265 hotels operating and 13.908 rooms available, expecting that for the next Easter holiday season this figure will increase to 15.000 rooms.

With this intense agenda and a varied offer of important sport events, Acapulco reaffirms its relevant position as a vibrant, leading destination underscoring its resilience, ready to continue attracting visitors from all over the world and writing new pages of success in sports and tourism consolidating itself as protagonist in the international scene where the sun and sports come together to continue strengthening this iconic Mexican destination.
