Barahona, The Dominican Republic | Development of a Cruise Terminal in its Port to Become a Leading Tourist Destination

Barahona, also known as Santa Cruz de Barhaona, an attractive seaport city in the southwest of the Dominican Republic located along Neiba Bay off the Caribbena Sea, at the northeastern foot of the Baoruco Mountains, started the development of a cruise terminal in its port to become a leading tourist destination.

This captivating Dominican centre is well known for its vibrant culture, immaculate white sand beaches and turquoise waters, among them the breathtaking Bahia de las Aguilas, lush rainforests, the stunning Parque Nacional Jaragua, a haven for explorers of diverse ecosystems and seekers of rare wildlife, and a relevant hub for the production and trade of sugar and coffee. 

The tourist terminal project is managed by CEIZTUR, of MINTUR the Executive Committee of Infrstructire of Tourism Areas with a cost of RD$712.968.690, a work of an area of 6.329 square metres of construction and 23.096 square metres of interventions in the port of Barahona.

The execution of the project called "Construcción de la terminal de cruceros en el Puerto de Barahona, provincia Barahona" represents a purpose of a social and economic nature, which will generate a great economic impact for the entire region with the development of tourism activities, especially cruises.

As a result of this investment, there will be a significant improvement in the standard of living of the local municipalities, and will respond to the express demand of the tourism sector and interest groups in the region.

In addition the construction of the cruise terminal will increase the flow of investors and tourists, strengthen economic growth and reduce the province's unemployment rate.

The cruise terminal will have a central square of 5.980 square metres for the integration of the project, with a combination of materials and landscaping, including gazebo area, parking for buses and cars. 

The project is divided into 3 blocks where they will house 35 commercial premises, in addition to recreational spaces such as restaurants, bars, a church and areas destined to recreate the experience of making rum, bathrooms, a security area, lighting and signage.

At the event, corresponding to the beginning of the works, via telephone President Luis Abinader defined as fundamental the take - off that Barahona will have in tourism and real estate with the start of the cruise port a great transformation, which will turn the South Region into a notable destination.

The President announced that that the Minister of Tourism of the Dominican Republic, David Collado will meet with the business sector to do everything necessary to achieve the tourist - take off of Barahona.

The Minister of Tourism highlighted the importance of the work for the development of tourism, especially cruise tourism, in that province and the rest of the region and he assured that the modern pier will increase the tourist flow in the province and the entire region will have a direct economic impact and spillover in the community.
